The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks square off against each other in a three-game set at Chase Field in Phoenix, so here’s the best betting pick for Tuesday night’s middle contest along with the latest odds on BetDSI Sportsbook

Excluding the opening clash of this series, the Padres are 9-7 against the Diamondbacks in 2021. San Diego is listed at -160 to win Tuesday, while the D-backs are +148 moneyline dogs with a total of 9.0 runs.

The Padres are now chasing the Reds

The San Diego Padres have been awful since August 11 and a 7-0 defeat to the Marlins at home. They’ve won only three of their last 16 games at any location, so the Padres entered the D-backs series with a 69-62 record, trailing the bottom wild card by a game and a half.

Just a few weeks ago, the Padres were five games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds, comfortably laying down in the playoff picture. San Diego has scored just 36 runs in its previous 11 outings while posting an ugly .181/.273/.304 batting line.

Blake Snell (6-5; 4.58 ERA) will get the starting call Tuesday, and the 28-year-old southpaw has done an excellent job through his five starts in August, posting a pristine 2.12 ERA and 44/10 K/BB ratio across 29.2 innings of work. Last week, Snell got 23 outs for the first time in his career but had to settle down with a no-decision in a tough 5-3 loss to the Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks are back to losing ways

The Arizona Diamondbacks fell to 44-88 on the season following a 7-4 defeat at Philadelphia last Sunday. It was their third loss in a row and seventh in the last ten outings, as the D-backs wrapped up a ten-game road trip with another lousy performance on the mound.

Arizona surrenders 5.56 runs per game this season (29th in the MLB). The Diamondbacks lead the majors in hits allowed (1210), and over the last couple of weeks, their pitching staff has compiled a poor 5.15 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and .268 batting average against.

Zac Gallen (2-7; 4.32 ERA) will get the Padres on Tuesday, and the 26-year-old righty is 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA in a couple of starts (9.2 innings) against San Diego this season. Gallen was charged for a loss in an 8-2 defeat to the Padres on August 15 when he yielded four earned runs on eight hits and three walks through five frames of work. Zac has a 3.77 ERA in five starts this month.

Trends:

San Diego:

  • N/A

Arizona:

  • 3-7 in the last ten games overall
  • 1-4 in Zac Gallen’s last five starts

San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Pick

Blake Snell met the D-backs three times in 2021 and went 1-0 with a sparkly 1.08 ERA and 27/7 K/BB ratio across 16.2 frames of work. The current Diamondbacks are slashing .192/.295/.237 in 53 at-bats against Snell, who’s really turned the corner in August.

On the other side, the Padres offense desperately needs to get things going. They are hitting .328/.393/.611 against Zac Gallen, launching six homers in 56 at-bats. San Diego certainly has a nice opportunity to score some runs in this matchup.

Pick: Take San Diego Padres at -160

The Total:

Considering the Padres’ recent form, it’s no strange that eight of their last 11 games went in the under. And that’s with their bullpen posting a disappointing 4.94 ERA and 4.81 FIP. On the other side, the Diamondbacks ‘pen has registered a 5.24 ERA and 5.16 FIP in the last two weeks, so I’ll take the over.

It’s a tough wager, as the D-backs will have a tall task against Blake Snell. I would stick with the visitors to win, but if the Padres get things going at the dish, we should see a high-scoring affair.

Pick: Go over 9.0 runs at +105
