The Delray Beach Open is one of three ATP Tour events this week, with the others being the IBN+ Argentina Open and ABN AMRO Open in the Netherlands. The US tournament is an ATP 250 hard court event that featured just eight of the top-50 players in the world, including defending champion and world No. 9 Taylor Fritz.

The quarter-finals for the 2024 Delray Beach Open begin Friday and five of the eight quarter-finalists, including the top three seeds, are Americans. Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul, who won his second career ATP title in Dallas last week, are joined by Marcos Giron and Patrick Kypson, who play in one quarter-final, ensuring at least one American in the semis.

Quarter-Final Matches

Jordan Thompson (+135) vs. Tommy Paul (-155)

In the first of four quarter-final matches on Friday, Paul takes on Aussie Jordan Thompson. The American is 0-1 in his career against Thompson and 8-2 overall this season, including 4-2 on hard courts. Thompson is 8-4, including 6-3 on outdoor hard courts. Thompson has looked great in his two wins as he hasn’t dropped a set and is coming off of a 6-2, 6-2 win over American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran. Paul, who had a first-round bye, beat Alex Michelsen 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the Round of 16.

Frances Tiafoe (-240) vs. Flavio Cobolli (+200)

Tiafoe hasn’t had a great start to the season. The second seed and world No. 15 lost in the second round of the Australian Open and won just one match the week prior to that at the Hong Kong Open. He needed a pair of tiebreaks to win his first match against Radu Albot in his Round of 16 match. Flavio Cobolli, meanwhile, is into the quarters with a pair of three-set victories, most recently over Zachary Svajda.

Patrick Kypson (+290) vs. Marcos Giron (-360)

Patrick Kypson, a wildcard player in the tournament, is on a career-best run right now. He won an ATP Challenger event last week and hasn’t dropped a set through his first two matches in Delray Beach. He’s a strong upset contender against Giron, who reached the finals of last week’s Dallas Open and is still looking for his first career ATP title.

Rinky Hijikata (+450) vs. Taylor Fritz (-600)

It’s not worth overthinking this match, which is the last of four quarter-final matches to take place on Friday. Fritz is the defending champion and easily the best player in the draw. He is also a lot fresher than Hijikata, considering he beat Nuno Borges in straight sets in his only match while Hijikata has played consecutive three-set matches against Liam Broady and Matteo Arnaldi.

Delray Beach Finals Prediction

Let’s assume Fritz wins tonight as expected. He would advance to face the winner of Giron and Kypson and be a major favorite against both players. His path to the final is clear and it’d be a major shock if he didn’t make it. In the bottom half of the draw, it’s unlikely to expect Paul, who has only won twice on the ATP Tour, to make a second consecutive final. Thompson is a strong bet to score an upset in their quarter-final and could also beat Tiafoe or Cobolli.

Pick: Fritz def. Thompson
