The MLB schedule for Wednesday, August 17, is offering us 15 games including this National League matchup, and here you can read the best Rockies vs. Cardinals betting pick and odds.

Colorado and St. Louis will play the second of a three-game series at Busch Stadium, and the Cardinals are -200 moneyline favorites on BetDSI Sportsbook, while the total is set at 7.5 runs. These National League rivals have met three times before this series and the Rockies won two of those games in Colorado.

Rockies lost the home series to the D-Backs

The Colorado Rockies opened a home series against the divisional foes Arizona Diamondbacks with a victory but they lost the next two. They even failed to score in one of those losses, which is rare for the Rockies at Coors Field.

Colorado did improve in that regard in the final game of the series, scoring four runs, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a 7-4 defeat. Ryan McMahon and Randal Grichuk were the only Rockies with a multi-hit display, while Ryan Feltner dropped to a 2-4 record after surrendering five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 4.1 innings.

German Marquez (6-9) will be on the mound for the 23rd time this season and is looking for the first win in five starts. The 27-year-old righty owns a bloated 5.08 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and a 104/44 K/BB ratio in 127.2 innings of work.

Cardinals edged the Brewers in a three-game home series

The St. Louis Cardinals managed to win two of three games in a divisional series against the Milwaukee Brewers at home. These victories helped them to overtake the Brewers at the top of the NL Central, and the Cards are hoping to stay there following this series with Colorado.

The final game of the series was interesting as we saw six homers, four of which were scored by the hosts to get a 6-3 win. Albert Pujols blasted a pair of home runs and drove in four runs in total, while Dylan Carlson and Tyler O’Neill added a homer each. Miles Mikolas bounced back from his catastrophic performance at Coors Field with eight strong innings during which he let two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Jordan Montgomery (5-3) is starting for the 23rd time this year and 3rd for St. Louis after his trade from the Yankees. The 29-year-old left-hander will carry a 3.37 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and a 106/26 K/BB ratio over 125.2 innings.

Trends:

Colorado:

  • 3-7 in the last ten road games vs. a left-handed starter
  • 1-4 in the last five during game 2 of a series
  • 2-7 in the last nine Wednesday games

St. Louis:

  • 5-0 in the last five home games vs. a team with a losing record
  • 14-3 in the last 17 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5
  • 5-1 in the last six home games vs. a right-handed starter

Colorado Rockies vs. St. Louis Cardinals Pick

Even though I believe the Cardinals are a better team and will be more motivated to get a win as they are fighting for the divisional title, I don’t think the Rockies will come with a white flag here at Busch Stadium. Marquez pitched well in his previous start against the Cardinals, registering a 3.00 ERA in 6.00 innings. Montgomery didn’t allow a single run in his first two starts for St. Louis, but given how the Rockies are batting against southpaws (.278 BA with 5.29 runs per nine innings), I will be shocked if Monty has another shutout start. I am giving an advantage to the hosts, but the Rockies will stay close in this one.

Pick: Take the Rockies +1.5 Run Line at -120

The Total

The last time Marquez started against St. Louis we had 14 runs in total, but that was played at Coors Field, and this will be at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals, just like the Rockies, are better against southpaws, so I am backing German to log a quality start and limit the hosts to two-three runs here. Under is 7-3 in the Cardinals’ last ten games with the total set at 7.0-8.5, while Under is 4-1 in St. Louis’ previous five home games vs. a right-handed starter.Pick: Go Under 7.5 runs at -110
