The bettors can choose from plenty of lines and markets, so let’s see what can we expect from this UEFA Europa League Final.

The Olympians reached the UEFA Europa League Final for the third time in their history, losing on the previous two occasions to Parma 3-0 in 1999, and Valencia 2-0 in 2004, so this clash against Atletico Madrid is certainly their biggest game in the last 14 years. Marseille will have another huge motive in this Final, as the winner will earn a ticket for the UEFA Champions League next season, and the Olympians will almost certainly fail to make it through their domestic championship. However, they’ll face a mighty Atletico Madrid side, and it’s no strange that bookmakers set the market on Marseille at +465.

In the previous round of the UEFA Europa League, the Olympians have beaten Salzburg 3-2 on aggregate. It was a tremendous matchup, and after Marseille’s 2-0 victory at home, the second leg in Salzburg went to the extra-time with Marseille scoring the decisive goal in the 116th minute of the game. In the Quarter-Finals, they’ve eliminated RB Leipzig 5-3 on aggregate after a stunning performance and a 5-2 victory in the second leg in front of the home fans. In the Round of 16, Marseille has smashed Athletic Bilbao in both legs of the matchup, while in the Round of 32 the Olympians have eliminated the Portuguese side Braga 3-1 on aggregate.

The 31-year old playmaker Dimitri Payet is the team’s key player who’s orchestrating the play from the midfield, and he is Marseille’s top assist-maker with 24 dishes in 46 appearances this season, also adding ten goals to his name. The 25-year old winger Florian Thauvin is another player who could make a big impact in this Final, as he’s the team’s leading scorer with 26 goals in 52 games this season, and the second-best assistant with 18 dishes for his teammates. The manager Rudi Garcia has some injury problems among the squad, as the centre-back Rolando (calf) and the striker Konstantinos Mitroglou (Achilles tendon) are both doubtful for the clash against Atleti.

Atleti have justified the odds reaching the UEFA Europa League Final for the third time in their history, while for the bookies, Atletico Madrid was the biggest favorite to lift the trophy since the Round of 32. Atletico Madrid won the previous two Finals against Fulham 2-1 in 2010, and Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in 2012 when Diego Simeone also was the manager in his first season at the helm. This time, Diego Simeone will have to watch the game from the stands due to a UEFA’s touchline ban after receiving the red card in the first leg of the Semi-Finals against Arsenal.

His boys have beaten Arsenal 1-0 in the second leg at home to win the matchup 2-1 on aggregate, and it was another typical Atleti’s performance with a superb defending and a terrific teamwork. In the Quarter-Finals, Atleti had a lot of problems with Sporting, losing the second leg on the road 1-0, but thanks to a 2-0 victory at Wanda Metropolitano they’ve made it through. In the Round of 16, they’ve demolished Lokomotiv Moscow 8-1 on aggregate, while in the Round of 32, Atleti have beaten FC Copenhagen 5-1 on aggregate.

At this moment, Diego Simeone doesn’t have serious injury problems among the squad, so we should see his best eleven against Marseille. The team’s top scorer Antoine Griezmann (27 goals in 47 appearances) will lead the frontline along with the striker Diego Costa who’s bagged seven goals in 21 matches so far. Griezmann is also the best assist-maker among Atleti with 15 dishes on his account, so he’s certainly the potential star of this Europa League Final.

Marseille vs. Atletico Madrid – Betting Trends and Match Prediction

  • Marseille lost just one out of their last nine games overall along with five wins and three draws
  • Marseille has a 7-2-5 record with a 20:12 goal difference in the Europa League this season
  • Nine out of 14 Marseille’s Europa League matches had two goals in the total or fewer
  • Atletico Madrid lost three out of their last ten games along with four wins and four stalemates
  • Atletico Madrid has a 5-2-1 record with a 17:4 goal difference in the Europa League this season
  • Five out of eight Atleti’s Europa League games had less than three goals on the scoreboard

According to all relevant sportsbooks, Atletico Madrid is a big -300 favorite to win the trophy outright, for a reason. They are a stronger team on a paper than Marseille with an exceptional team spirit, and their defense is mostly brilliant, so the Olympians could have serious troubles to find the back of Jan Oblak’s net, while the price on both teams to score here at +110 tells the bettors a lot.

I think Atleti will probably prove their quality, but I also believe Marseille will score if they find the right attacking flow, like so many times this season. Therefore, I’ll go with the over, but you can check out all lines and odds on BetDSI Sportsbook.

MY PICK: Over 2.5 Goals (+120)
