UEFA Champions League Match of the Day Round 2 – Tottenham vs. Barcelona (Group B)

As the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League goes on with the Round 2 games, the bettors should pay attention to the Group B clash between Tottenham and Barcelona. In the Round 1, two weeks ago, Barcelona has easily overcome PSV at home, while Tottenham was beaten by Inter on the road, so the Spurs will need a positive result when they meet Barca this Wednesday, October 3rd, at Wembley Stadium in London.

The Spurs made a shaky start in the English Premier League, losing two of their first five games, but after a couple of road victories in a row against Brighton 2-1 and Huddersfield 2-0, they are sitting at the fourth spot of the Premier League table with a 5-0-2 record and a goal difference of 14:7. However, the Spurs lost their opening tilt of the Champions League against Inter 2-1 on the road, despite having the lead until the 86th minute of the game, so the upcoming match against Barcelona could be decisive for Tottenham’s future in the Group B.

The Spurs’ playmaker Christian Eriksen scored the only goal against Inter, and he should ready for the next game after having some injury problems recently. Harry Kane will lead the front line, and the Spurs’ captain hit the brace against Huddersfield last weekend to top the team’s scoring chart with five goals in all competitions this season. The wingers Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela both have scored three goals so far, but one of these two guys will probably start off the bench against Barcelona. The Spurs are having problems with injured goalkeepers, as the third-choice Paulo Gazzaniga already has three starts, but I expect to see Hugo Lloris back between the sticks on Wednesday night.

Betting Trends:

  • Tottenham has a 5-1-3 overall record this season with an 18:11 goal difference
  • Tottenham conceded in seven out of its’ last nine games overall
  • Just one of Tottenham’s last nine games had less than three goals in total
  • Tottenham conceded in the previous four home games straight

After a 4-0 thrashing of PSV in the opening game of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League, Barcelona couldn’t get a victory in three games in a row, drawing with Girona 2-0 and Athletic Bilbao 1-1 at home, and losing to Leganes 2-1 on the road. Barcelona is still at the top of the Spanish La Liga with a 4-2-1 record and an 18:8 goal difference, but the defeat against Leganes was the first ever in Barca’s history when they faced the bottom side team as the leader of La Liga.

Barca is having some huge problems at the defensive end in the last few weeks, conceding in five of their last six games, and the reliable defender Samuel Umtiti will miss the action for at least two months due to a knee injury. Lionel Messi is still the team’s talisman, scoring eight goals and five assists in nine games this season, including a hat-trick against PSV. The winger Ousmane Dembele has bagged five goals in nine appearances thus far, while the striker Luis Suarez has added three goals and three assists to his name.

Betting Trends:

  • Barcelona is winless for three games in a row
  • Barcelona has a 6-2-1 overall record this season with a 24:9 goal difference
  • Barcelona kept the net intact in four of these nine tilts
  • Five out of Barca’s previous six games had at least three goals in total

Match Prediction

The bookies expect to see an open-flow game, setting the odds on the over 2.5 goals at -188, while the wages on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals are set at -125. Both Tottenham and Barcelona are struggling with their defensive jobs recently, so I wouldn’t be surprised if both sides find the net here. Likewise, Lionel Messi on one side and Harry Kane on the other will be huge threats for goalies. Messi is at -138 odds to score anytime in the game, whilst Kane is at +100 odds, just like Barca’s Luis Suarez.

Barcelona will certainly try to establish its’ short-passing game, and the visitors should have the ball in their possession for at least 60% of the time. I expect to see Tottenham attacking on the counter, while set-pieces could also be the hosts’ advantage. The hosts are under a huge pressure to avoid the loss, so they could be playing patiently against favored visitors. I think the Spurs are capable of earning a positive result here, and I’m backing both teams to score, but the chalk at 3.5 goals on totals could be a tricky one.

The Pick: Tottenham AH +0.5 at -118

Additional Pick: Over 3.5 Goals at +130
