The UEFA Europa League betting action is back with Matchday 1 of the 2020-21 season, as the group stage kicks off Thursday, October 22.
The opening round brings plenty of interesting matchups, and don’t be disheartened if you haven’t heard of LASK Linz. The Black-Whites reached the Europa League Round of 16 last season and lost to Manchester United, and this time, they’ll try to upset the odds against another Premier League heavyweight.
Tottenham is certainly a massive fave to open the group phase with a victory. The Lilywhites are one of the strongest teams in the competition, so let’s see what the best betting pick for Thursday’s clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, UK.
Tottenham vs. LASK
Three-way: 1: Tottenham -333; X: +475 Draw; 2: LASK +850
Spread -1.5: Tottenham -115; LASK -103
Total 3.0 Goals: Over -118; Under +100
Both Teams to Score: Yes -115; No -105
The Lilywhites had to play qualifiers for the 2020-21 Europa League. They easily outlasted Lokomotiv Plovdiv 2-1 and Shkendija 3-1 on the road before dismantling Maccabi Haifa at home to clinch their spot in Group J alongside LASK, Ludogorets, and Antwerp.
Tottenham is undefeated in eight straight outings in all competitions, tallying five wins and three draws in the process. After the first five rounds of the English Premier League, the Lilywhites are sitting at the seventh spot of the table with eight points and a 15:8 goal difference.
They are coming off a disappointing 3-3 home draw against West Ham. The Lilywhites blew a 3-0 lead, allowing three goals in the last 12 minutes of the second half.
Forwards Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son lead the way for Tottenham, combining for a whopping 18 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. The Spurs can count on all their players, but their manager Jose Mourinho will probably make a few changes in his starting eleven, as the Premier League is a priority for Tottenham.
- Tottenham won five of its last nine home games along with three draws and a loss
- The Lilywhites’ last eight games saw both teams scoring
- Six of Tottenham’s last eight contests produced at least three goals in total
The Black-Whites played two qualifying rounds for the 2020-21 Europa League season and impressed on both occasions. LASK thrashed off Dunajska Streda 7-0 at home, while a 4-1 road victory over Sporting Lisbon was a huge surprise.
They are fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga after the first four rounds, recording two wins, one draw, and a loss along with a 5:5 goal difference. The Black-Whites are coming off a comfortable 3-0 victory over SV Worgl in the Austrian Cup, but they suffered a tough 3-0 defeat at Rapid in their previous Bundesliga clash.
Striker Marko Raguz and winger Andreas Gruber combined for 11 goals and five assists this season, while midfielder Peter Michorl accounted for three goals and five dishes.
- LASK lost three of its last six road games along with two wins and a loss
- Six of LASK’s last seven road contests produced three or more goals in total
- LASK scored in each but one of its previous 11 outings away from home
The hosts shouldn’t have too many problems to win this game even if they decide to make a few tweaks in their starting lineup. The visitors, on the other side, will come in full strength, for sure, but I’m not sure that would be enough against mighty Tottenham.
The odds on Tottenham to win straight up are not attractive, so I have to go with a combo bet. Taking the hosts to cover a 1.5-goal spread is an interesting option, but I’m backing Tottenham along with three or more goals in total.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the visitors find the net. LASK is a very dangerous team when sitting back and launching counter-attacks, but Tottenham should have enough firepower to score a few goals at home, especially if both Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son start this game.
