The English Premier League continues this weekend with a couple of intriguing matchups, and we picked the match between Southampton and Tottenham. The game will be played at St. Mary’s on Sunday, January 21st. With plenty of picks and markets to choose from, don’t waste your time and join the action at BangTheBook.
The reason why we selected this matchup as the Match of the Day is that of Southampton’s current situation as they cannot afford to lose, while Tottenham is playing very well lately and a potential win here could end Mauricio Pellegrino’s reign at St. Mary’s.

The Saints are without the Premier League victory in the previous ten matches and the only thing that kept Mauricio Pellegrino at St. Mary’s is the FA Cup success as Southampton eliminated Fulham to progress to the 1/16 finals. His side played well at Vicarage Road last weekend and had a 2-0 first-half lead over Watford thanks to James Ward-Prowse’s brace, but the hosts responded and equalized in the last minute. That draw sent the Saints to the 17th position with just a point ahead of the relegation zone, and a loss here would send them to the bottom three. This match could be Pellegrino’s last, so the home players will do everything in their power to keep the gaffer at the helm.
Southampton played 25 games so far in the 2017/18, recording five victories, nine draws, and 11 losses, with a goal difference of 24:36, which is 2.4 goals per contest on average. The Saints didn’t taste a home win in the last four matches, but they managed to score in each of the previous five, while they also failed to keep the net intact in the process.
Charlie Austin is the team’s top scorer with six goals in 17 appearances, but he’s dealing with a hamstring injury and is unable to help his teammates on this one. Steven Davis, Dusan Tadic, ManoloGabbiadini, and James Ward-Prowse added three goals apiece and they will be the players to watch for the hosts in this clash. Tadic, Nathan Redmond, and Ryan Bertrand are the best assist-makers with three dishes to their respective names, so the visitors should pay special attention to the trio, especially to Tadic and Redmond. Except for Austin who is sidelined, Mauricio Pellegrino doesn’t have any injury-related concerns, only the centre-back Maya Yoshida is listed as doubtful with a thigh injury.
Spurs are in an excellent form of six matches without a defeat, winning five of them, including the 4-0 thrashing of Everton at Wembley. Harry Kane continued his hot streak with a brace, while Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen also scored to give their team the 44th point of the season. Tottenham is currently in the 5th place in the Premier League with three points behind Liverpool and Chelsea who are occupying the Champions League spots at the moment, so Mauricio Pochettino’s men know that dropping points here is not an option.
Tottenham played 32 games in this campaign, recording 20 victories, six draws, and six losses, with a goal difference of 67:28, which is almost three goals per contest on average. Spurs have lost two out of the previous five away matches, but they won the last two and kept the clean sheet in the process while scoring five goals.
Harry Kane is the team’s leading scorer with 28 goals in 28 appearances and is undoubtedly a man to watch in this tilt, while Son Heung-Min with 11, Dele Alli with nine, and Christian Eriksen with seven are also big contributors to the attack. Alli is the most creative individual with 11 assists to his name, while Eriksen with eight, Kieran Trippier with seven, and Son with six ae following the young midfielder. Mauricio Pochettino cannot count on Toby Alderweireld (hamstring) and Danny Rose (knee), while Hugo Lloris (illness) and Harry Winks (ankle) are doubtful to perform here.
Southampton vs. Tottenham Hotspur – Betting Trends and Match Prediction
- Southampton scored in each of the previous five home matches
- Southampton conceded at least a goal in each of the last six games at St. Mary’s
- Tottenham scored 15 goals in the last five games
- Tottenham scored in each of the previous six away matches
Tottenham is a favorite in this tilt and they have an excellent record at St. Mary’s in recent years, winning four out of the last five visits, scoring at least two goals in each of those encounters. However, Spurs managed to keep their net intact only once since 1999, so I believe the host will find the way to the net on Sunday.
MY PICK: Both teams to score YES (-133)
