Schalke 04 vs. Borussia Dortmund – Match of the Day (Round 30)

The gap between two rivals is just one point and with the crowded situation at the top of Bundesliga, any dropped or won point in the next five round could be decisive in the hunt for the Champions League next term. This is a highly unpredictable tilt and it could go either way, which is fantastic for neutrals, while the fans of respective teams anticipate a nervy tie. The game between Schalke and Dortmund will take place at Veltins Arena on Sunday, April 15th.

SCHALKE 04

The Miners were in an excellent run of six consecutive wins before Hamburger defeated them 3-2 in the latest Bundesliga tilt, and while losing to the bottom side didn’t go well with the fans, everything will be forgotten if they beat Dortmund on Sunday. Schalke got to a 1-0 lead through Naldo in the 9th minute, but Filip Kostic equalized only a few minutes later before Lewis Holtby scored for HSV in the 52nd minute. Guido Burgstaller made it 2-2 with half an hour to go, but the hosts got to a deserved win in the 82nd minute. Domenico Tedesco’s side is currently in the 2nd position with 52 points, only one point ahead of Dortmund, and three more than Leverkusen.

Schalke 04 played 33 games so far in the 2017/18, recording 19 victories, seven draws, and seven losses, with a goal difference of 52:34, which is 2.60 goals per contest on average. The Miners are in a fine form at home recently as they won four straight at Veltins Arena, scoring six goals in the process and allowing just one in return.

Guido Burgstaller is the team’s top scorer with 12 goals in 31 appearances; Naldo has six, Daniel Caligiuri added five goals to his name, while Yevhen Konoplyanka, Franco Di Santo, Nabil Bentaleb, and Leon Goretzka chipped in with four goals apiece. Amine Harit and Caligiuri are the best assist-makers with seven dishes each, while Goretzka and Burgstaller contributed with five assists apiece. Domenico Tedesco cannot count on Matija Nastasic (ruptured cruciate ligament) and Baba Rahman (knee), while Breel Embolo (muscle), Bastian Oczipka (groin), and Cedric Teuchert (ankle) are all listed as doubtful.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

The Black and Yellows are not playing well lately as they won only three out of the previous nine matches, but managed to bounce back from a disastrous 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich with a 3-0 victory over Stuttgart at home. Dortmund desperately needed three points and delivered it thanks to Christian Pulisic, Michy Batshuayi, and Maximilian Philipp who all scored in space of 20 minutes, and the hosts secure a win after an hour of play. Peter Stöger’s side is in the 3rd position with 51 points and will stay among the best four teams even with a loss here, but the rivalry between two sides is big and far from being friendly, so a defeat is not an option.

Borussia Dortmund played 43 games in this campaign, recording 17 victories, 13 draws, and 13 losses, with a goal difference of 81:62, which is 3.32 goals per contest on average. The Black and Yellows are in a poor form on the road recently as they are without a win in the previous four matches, scoring only two goals in the process and allowing eight goals in return.

Michy Batshuayi is the team’s leading scorer with nine goals in 13 appearances; Maximilian Philipp is following him on a goal-scoring chart with seven goals, while Shinji Kagawa and Andriy Yarmolenko scored six goals apiece. Kagawa is the most creative individual at Westfalen with seven assists, while Christian Pulisic, Mahmoud Dahoud, Mario Gotze, Andre Schurrle, and Yarmolenko chipped in with six dishes each. Peter Stoger will be without Kagawa (ankle), Raphael Guerreiro (muscle), Sebastian Rode (groin), and Erik Durm (ankle).

Schalke 04 vs. Borussia Dortmund – Betting Trends and Match Prediction

  • Schalke scored at least a goal in each but one game at home this season
  • Schalke kept the clean sheet in three out of the previous four matches at Veltins Arena
  • Dortmund failed to score in three out of 22 away matches in this campaign
  • Dortmund didn’t score in the last two games on the road

Dortmund won two out of the previous six H2H meetings and is unbeaten in those games, while Schalke’s last victory over Borussia came at Veltins Arena in September 2014. The previous four tilts ended without a winner and that could be the case here as well, but I believe we will see goals on both sides. Although I don’t expect it to finish 4-4 like it was earlier this season, two goals in each net could happen.

MY PICK: Both teams to score and Over 2.5 goals (+110)
