The New York Giants went into Joe Judge’s first season as head coach hoping that they would have a full complement of weapons at some point, or close to it. But now they have to play the rest of the season without their star running back. But if you think THEY have problems, the San Francisco 49ers can tell you a few stories. These teams will get together on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. BetAnySports customers get reduced juice, so they can have a better line with more value. Barkley suffered a torn ACL early in last weekend’s game against the Chicago Bears. The Giants also lost wide receiver Sterling Shepard in the game. But you really have to give them credit; they shut the Bears out in the second half and had a chance to win the game in the end, only to be victimized by an offensive pass interference penalty by Golden Tate, one of those weapons who had been slow in getting back into action.
Now the burden is a little heavier on the shoulders of Daniel Jones, who has averaged almost two turnovers a game in his NFL career. That is, unless Wayne Gallman, who is being given one last chance to make himself relevant, can fill Barkley’s shows to some degree.
The Giants have started out a season 0-2 for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. But Judge, one of the younger head coaches in the league, still retains a positive attitude about things. He said he was “very proud of the way the team finished.” Will this carry over to Sunday’s game against a Niner team that is banged-up to say the least?
Here are the pro football betting odds on this game, as they have been posted at BetAnySports:
San Francisco 49ers -3.5 (-105)
New York Giants +3.5 (-115)
Over 42.5 points -110
Under 42.5 points -110
One thing that’s going to be a lingering problem for the Giants is thye offensive line, which came into camp knowing it was going to start new people. They gave up four sacks to the Bears, and of course, that’s hazardous, since Jones is always susceptible to fumbling the football.
Under normal circumstances this would be a grave concern against the Niners, but these are not normal circumstances. The defense, which was already missing Dee Ford, had to sustain the loss of both Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas to ACL injuries against the Jets last week. On top of injuries to both Raheem Mostert and Jimmy Garoppolo, this brought up a lot of complaints on the part of head coach Kyle Shanahan about the new turf that has recently been installed at MetLife.
It’s kind of ironic, because when the Niners opened up their new stadium in Santa Clara, there were also a ton of complaints about the turf they have installed, which was said to be extremely soft, even after a couple of tries. In this instance, Shanahan is calling it “sticky.” Meanwhile, Judge is saying “what’s the problem? WE don’t have a problem.”
And guess what? San Francisco goes right back to the Meadowlands for this week’s game. Those schedule-makers were really nice to them, huh?
This is really bothering Shanahan. who has a number of other players on the shelf, including Tevin Coleman, Weston Richburg, Dre Greenlaw, Deebo Samuel and Richard Sherman. Also, George Kittle, who had to miss last week’s game with a knee sprain, is being held out. Nick Mullens starts at QB; he threw for 2277 yards and 13 TD’s with ten INT’s when he took Jimmy G’s place a couple of years ago.
I think Shanahan is worried about putting Kittle out there on a field that he maintains has caused more knee and ankle problems than anything he’s seen so far.
And you know, maybe that affects how he’s going to use some of his other players. This is a factor. Of course, with some of these problems, they still crushed the Jets last week. But the Giants’ atmosphere is better, even with the Barkley injury. And the Niners are a skeleton crew. We’re taking points with the home underdog.
