We keep telling you people – you can’t stop the Miami Dolphins, you can only hope to contain them.
The last two opponents couldn’t do it, and now the Buffalo Bills, a wild card contender coming off a loss in Cleveland, will get a crack at it.
They’ve played before at New Era Field, and now they’ll square off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, which game time set for 1 PM ET. And don’t forget that if you are a BetAnySports customer, you can get reduced juice before the game starts, and then, after things get underway, you can place wagers in real time through Sports Betting Ultra.
After beating the Jets and Colts the last two weeks, people around Miami are starting to ask, “Gee, what if we’re not able to draft Tua? What if we can’t draft Joe Burrow? Or Justin Herbert? Well, chances are they’ll be able to grab one of those guys, but as for the #1 overall pick, they now “trail” the Cincinnati Bengals by two games in that race. And I don’t think they’re going to catch up.
What management is looking for is one thing. What the players on the field are seeking is quite another. And the Dolphins have now hit a sort of stride that has, over the last five games, made them look much different than the team that appeared to be rolling over in those first two nightmarish contests.
The Bills played the Browns on relatively even terms most of the way last week, and even led the game until the last two minutes. But they lost it on a late Baker Mayfield touchdown pass. That was the fifth time in nine games that they had scored fewer than 20 points, not to mention their seventh “under” in those nine games. Of course, only one team has exceeded the 21 points Miami scored on them in the first meeting.
In the pro football betting odds that have been placed on this game, the Bills are laying some points on the road, although there was some movement toward the Dolphins:
Buffalo Bills -5.5
Miami Dolphins +5.5
Over 40 points -110
Under 40 points -110
Take advantage of reduced juice at BetAnySports and avoid having to lay the usual -110 on football. It saves you money on every wager you make!
Miami didn’t do anything sensational on offense last week, with only 229 total yards. Kalen Ballage averaged just 2.2 yards a carry on the ground, after the Dolphins thinned out their backfield by trading Kenyan Drake and saw Mark Walton get hit with a suspension. But you can tell this team has really responded to Ryan Fitzpatrick’s leadership on the field. And his eleven-yard touchdown run provided quite a bit of uplift.
Now, we have to admit that these Dolphins are operating with a patchwork crew of offensive linemen and defensive backs. And that the injury to Preston Williams, who was making some real progress, makes the wide receiver crew less threatening.
Also, we concede that in these last two weeks, the Dolphins have gone into a game against a hurting Jets team fueled by animosity for their former head coach Adam Gase, and then had the good fortune to be facing an Indianapolis club that was without QB Jacoby Brissett and three of his wide receivers.
But these guys haven’t quit on their coach and their coach hasn’t quit on them. And this game, at the pro level, is still a lot about confidence and effort.
And when you think about it, a 14-7 victory over Tennessee is the closest thing the Bills have to a real quality win. They have more working parts than Miami; that much is certain, but this is not the kind of offense (ranked 23rd in yards/game) that is going to run away and hide. And the 31-21 margin in the first meeting was produced by a TD return of an onside kick in the waning moments, after the Dolphins had drawn to within 24-21.
I’m going to maintain some faith and admiration for this team, which has made a nice little comeback after being left for dead by the people in the front office (albeit for a good long-term reason). This is too many points to give the Fish, who have actually covered their last five at the “Rock.”
