Schiavone became the first Italian woman ever to make it to the finals of the French Open. Her best career French Open finish was actually in her first appearance in 2001 when she made it all the way to the quarterfinals before getting bounced. Since then, the fourth round is the best that she has ever done at this event. Recently, Schiavone reached the quarterfinals in last year's Wimbledon and made the fourth round both in the US Open in '09 and the Australian Open in 2010. This was a fantastic bounce back for a woman that was upset in the first round in Paris a year ago. The only set that the Italian dropped in this tournament was the very first one that she partook in against Russian Regina Kulikova. Since that point, Sophie Ferguson, Na Li, Maria Kirilenko, and Caroline Wozniacki all dropped in straight sets. The semifinal against one of the top players in the world, #5 Elena Dementieva was stopped after one set, as the Russian woman retired with an injury.

Stosur made a name for herself last year by making it to the semifinals of this event. Even though she really hasn't had much success in any of the other major tournaments, Stosur capitalized on the clay courts once again, marching through to her first Grand Slam final in fine fashion. The trip to the second weekend of this tournament was by no means difficult, as she only dropped one set in three matches against Simona Halep, Rossana De Los Rios, and Anastasia Pivovarova. However, from that point on, trying to get through Justine Henin, Serena Williams, and Jelena Jankovic may as well have been going up against Murderer's Row for the old school New York Yankees. Still, Stosur continued to battle through each potential speed bump, especially in a match that she trailed for virtually the entire way against the younger Williams sister. Beating Jankovic 6-1, 6-2 was arguably the most impressive feat that anyone, male or female, has pulled off here at Roland Garros in this tournament.

Stosur has to be considered the option to go with here. She has won this event in doubles before, and the Aussie is due to break onto the scene with a massive victory. This is very "chalky" proposition, but Schiavone hasn't done nearly as much to deserve her spot in this finale as Stosur has, and that will be rewarded for the Australian on Saturday.
