The term “Money Down” in football is another name for third down. This is the down that needs to be converted if teams want to succeed. For those that like to bet on football, information is the Money Down. The right information can make the difference in winning or losing.
Leading up to the start of the regular season I will deliver a daily article appropriately titled “The Money Down”. It will include everything from injuries, stats, trends and the latest happenings around the league.
Cleveland Browns: Hoyer vs. Manziel
All the talk in the preseason has been about rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel, but Brian Hoyer looks as though he is taking all the right steps to lock up the starting job.
Brian Hoyer, not Johnny Manziel, will reportedly be the starter for the Browns second preseason game. http://t.co/QI6OVp0JpD

Manziel was late for a meeting, which is first mishap of training camp, but this was said to have nothing to do with the decision to start Hoyer in the second preseason game. Pettine emphasized that although Hoyer will start, he and Johnny Manziel will share time with the first team. Pettine had said Wednesday that the starters would play about half the game, which means Manziel and Hoyer will get about one quarter each to prove they should be the Week 1 starter.
NFL Preseason Betting Trends: So Far Games have been “under”whelming The under has hit almost 78 percent of the time this preseason with teams now 4-14 over/under in 18 games.
Carolina Panthers: Big Minutes For Starters in Week 2 The Panthers have a short week ahead, so they will treat this week like the third week in the preseason playing their starters for most of the game. Coach Ron Rivera said the starters would play at least a half and possibly into the third quarter. That is the case for everyone except QB Cam Newton who is still nursing a sore ankle.
Still concern over Cam Newton's ankle, but #Panthers coach Ron Rivera says Cam will play at least 1st qtr vs. #Chiefs. http://t.co/DOAkNBPA9l — Joe Person (@josephperson) August 14, 2014
For Newton, the goal is about 40 snaps. This could give an advantage to the Panthers who will treat this game more seriously than they normally would.
Detroit Lions: West Coast Collapse
This Thursday during the Gridiron Gambling Report, a NFL informative podcast I do every week, (shameless plug) the host Adam Burke, brought up an interesting point about teams that have to travel. He mentioned that teams that go coast-to-coast in the preseason are in a bad situation. This week the Detroit Lions are traveling to play the Oakland Raiders and they are not focusing on winning.
They’ve done little game planning in preparation for the Raiders. It’s still all about the Lions and figuring out what roles fit which guys the best.
The one thing that they did do is move their practice time to try and anticipate the time change.

The Lions understand this is an uphill battle. For football bettors this could be a chance to fade the Lions. “Traditionally East Coast teams on the West Coast usually struggle a little bit because of the time change,’’ Lions running back Reggie Bush said.
Rookie QB: The Best of the Young Guns Johnny Manziel may get all of the media hype, but there are other young quarterbacks who are playing much better and turning heads in the preseason. Blake Bortles of the Jacksonville Jaguars had his second straight solid start by completing 11 of 17 passes for 160 yards, although 45 yards came on the final play of the first half on a hookup with receiver Allen Hurns. As expected, everyone is already calling for him to start the season under center.
The Jacksonville Jaguars should name Blake Bortles their starting QB already: http://t.co/qUVIYMs6Ba (@chris_strauss) — USA TODAY Sports (@USATODAYsports) August 15, 2014

There is also another rookie that is getting high praise although many people not even know his name.
Ron Jaworski: #AZCardinals' Logan Thomas is most impressive rookie QB. @AndyJ0seph has more: http://t.co/swpkQILHqV pic.twitter.com/DjWhuVu02O — azcentral sports (@azcsports) August 14, 2014
The Arizona Cardinals have Carson Palmer but he is a veteran and it looks like Logan Thomas is doing everything right to be the future of this franchise.
Houston Texas: Healing in Houston?
Nothing is official yet, but the Houston Texans look like they are starting to get healthy.

The playing time for the upcoming preseason game has not been announced, but this is good news for a Houston team that is looking to rebound from a tough season a year ago.
