With the start of the NFL season upon us, the league’s quarterback battlers are over—for now. Yes, each team has a winner from the preseason, but that doesn’t mean they have the job locked down for good. Winning the preseason battle means you get to start in Week One, but they will likely have a short leash.
While fans were eager to see who won the respective battles, they will be just as eager to speculate on who will get benched first—which they can, of course, bet on (odds via BetOnline.ag):
- Will Dwayne Haskins be benched during Reg. Season
- Yes -275
- No Locked
Haskins probably got the starting nod because the team is still a little leery about the health of Alex Smith. He’s passed every medical test he needs to, but it is understandable if the team is hesitant considering the gruesome nature of his injury.
But, at the same time, Haskins is the future of the team at quarterback. However, if they let him flounder too long, they risk doing more damage than good. So, it wouldn’t be shocking if Ron Rivera has him on a pretty short leash.
- Will Mitch Trubisky be benched during Reg. Season
- Yes -155
- No +115
The Bears do not want to bench Trubisky. Yes, they have a lot of money invested in Nick Foles, but they also have a lot of draft capital invested in Trubisky. Since they declined his fifth-year option, they will want to make sure they give him a chance to win the position and earn a new contract.
But if everything else is clicking and he is struggling, the team will not hesitate to sit him down and give Foles the nod.
- Will Ryan Fitzpatrick be benched during Reg. Season
- Yes -700
- No +400
Fitzpatrick is just keeping the seat warm for Tagovailoa. Once the team thinks he is ready, if Fitzpatrick starts to struggle, or the Dolphins are out of playoff contention, Tagovailoa will be in. He is probably the one rookie quarterback fans can count on seeing at some point during the season.
- Will Tyrod Taylor be benched during Reg. Season
- Yes -130
- No -110
Taylor has been a starting quarterback in the past. But while he did do a good job overall, he did not do a great one. However, with the Chargers taking Justin Herbert with the No. 6 pick in the draft, he knows the fan base will want to see him sooner rather than later.
Should he struggle, the hook is going to come.
So—how should you bet?
The only guy that is practically a lock to get benched at some point is Fitzpatrick. Expectations are low for the Dolphins, and as soon as they are out of the playoff picture – if not sooner – Tagovailoa will be in. There is a good chance Trubisky and Haskins get benched, but since both teams are going to want to give them every opportunity possible, they might not be.
But if you wanted to pick one, go with Trubisky.
As for Taylor, he could be good enough to keep the job all year. If the team doesn’t have to start Herbert, they will likely not mind leaving him on the bench—so, bet ‘no.’
