You have to admire the Indianapolis Colts’ aggressive posture. They want to win now, and there aren’t too many plausible reasons why they shouldn’t be able to.
BetAnySports customers know that at least two other teams in the AFC South are going to be very formidable (Tennessee, Houston). And both the Texans and Titans made it into the playoffs last season. But Indy isn’t far away. It’s just that they probably weren’t going to get there with Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback. He’s a great backup-type, but I’m not sure he’s going to reach the next level.
However, Philip Rivers, who arguably has Hall of Fame-worthy numbers, may be a guy who can help them go deep in the playoffs. And perhaps a change of scenery isn’t a bad thing for him. After all, he wasn’t crazy at all about playing in Los Angeles, keeping himself and his family, for the most part, in San Diego. So he may like it in a new location.
And I have a feeling he’ll enjoy reuniting with Frank Reich, who was a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator with him in San Diego. In his head coaching role, Reich has shown an innovative streak, while at the same time getting back to basics. The Colts have one of the most balanced offenses in the league; only four teams in the NFL ran the ball more often (on a percentage basis) than they did.
Not that Rivers never had any running backs with the Chargers. Indeed, when you think about people like LaDanian Tomlinson and Melvin Gordon, among others, he’s had support. But he’s thrown the football an exceedingly high percentage of the time anyway. The success of the Colts may well depend upon whether Reich can get Rivers to dial that back.
You can tell what Indy’s intentions were by the way they drafted. Taking Jonathan Taylor, a two-time 2000-yard back in college, on the second round, was a statement that they would like to run heavy. Between him and Marlon Mack, who can punish defenses, they’re going to have one of the league’s best ground games.
The guy they took with the 34th overall pick is going to be a huge asset to Rivers. USC’s Michael Pittman is not known as a speed-burner, but the scouts continually rave about his “ball skills,” and that he hardly ever drops a pass. And he may be exciting teaming up with TY Hilton, if Hilton can stay healthy.
In the fifth round, the Colts came up with one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the draft when they took Ball State’s Danny Pinter, who will likely be moved inside from tackle to a guard position. In the round before that, they took QB Jacob Eason, the Georgia transfer who wound up at Washington. He is said to possess one of the strongest arms in thew draft, but has not developed the intangibles. He wil be behind Rivers and Brissett, so he can afford to be a developmental type, as the Colts get to see whether he can be part of the their future.
There’s another thing that makes this draft a success for the Colts. I mean, if I told you that you could draft an All-Pro with the 13th pick, would you pull the trigger? Of course you would.
In effect, that is what Indianapolis did when they dealt that pick in order to acquire San Francisco defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who comes in and makes an immediate impact on a defense that can use it.
The Colts currently sit at +3000 to win the Super Bowl at BetAnySports. They are also the favorites right now to win the AFC South at +145, and they are -130 to top nine victories. They look like a playoff favorite to me.
