NFL Picks & Preview — Titans vs. Jaguars: Jags Seeking Upset at Tough Road Venue

Well, the Jacksonville Jaguars, from whom almost nothing was expected, managed to pull off an upset last week against the Indianapolis Colts. But that came at home, and against a quarterback (Philip Rivers) who continued to be error-prone. Can they do something along those lines on the road, against last year’s AFC runner-up? That what some BetAnySports patrons will try to figure out as they take on the Tennessee Titans, in a game that begins at 1 PM ET at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

To say that Stephen Gostkowski bailed the Titans out of a jam may be a bit of a mischaracterization, because he helped put them in that mess in the first place. It is true that he hit a 25-yard field goal in the waning seconds to give Tennessee a 16-14 win, he had also missed three field goals and an extra point previous to that. That is the kind of things that never happened to him in the fourteen seasons he was with the New England Patriots.

Clearly that is not the kind of thing the Titans were looking for when they signed him. But Gostkowski has enough history on his side that we can give him a mulligan here.

Jacksonville was catching quite a few points at home against Indianapolis, which had received some hype due to the arrival of some new faces, including Philip Rivers and DeForrest Buckner. But Gardner Minshew stole the show, completing 19 of 20 for 173 yards and three touchdowns. And as the Indy offense regressed to doing the same thing the Chargers had done for all these years with the run-pass ratio, the Jags picked off Rivers twice and had another interception called back in the 27-20 victory.

In the odds at BetAnySports we’ll use for this NFL preview, the Titans are laying points at home:

Tennessee Titans -7.5
Jacksonville Jaguars +7.5

Over 44 points -110
Under 44 points -110

It does appear that Minshew has a lot of different ways he can go, and Laviska Shenault, the recipient of a 15-yard TD pass, is offering indications that he is going to settle right in with a receiver corps that includes DJ Chark, Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, and perhaps (in time) Tyler Eifert, who made the controversial decision (we guess) to wear the name of a slain St. Louis police officer on his helmet, rather than Jacob Blake, the Wisconsin shooting victim, then caught just one pass on the day.

But we have to make note of a few things. For one, Jacksonville was outgained to the tune of 445-241 by the Colts. That is quite a disparity. Another thing to point out is that this Jaguar may be searching for a while for a solution in the backfield, in the wake of the release of Leonard Fournette.

Not that there was any offensive bonanza on the part of Tennessee, but their three big guns looked in pretty good form. Ryan Tannehill threw for 249 yards and a pair of TD’s and was not intercepted. Derrick Henry had 116 yards on the ground. And Corey Davis had 101 yards in receptions. And the Titans did have at least three scoring drives without points, due to Gostkowski’s flubs.

Tennessee has exhibited some home bias in this series, as they have beaten the Jags six straight, with five covers, in Music City. And while Minshew is now 7-6 as a starting NFL quarterback, Tannehill is 10-4 since taking over the QB job for the Titans.

We’re not sure we are going to get 219 rushing yards out of the Titans, as they produced in the last meeting. That having been said, we still think there is, at this moment, more upside with the home team. So yes, we’ll lay the points.
