NFL Betting — It’s Haskins The Rest Of the Way For Redskins

0

Those Washington Redskins fans who go way back with the team might remember those glory days under George Allen. And if that’s the case, they will recall the spirited coach’s mantra: “The Future is NOW.”

Well, for a Redskins team that is starting rookie Dwayne Haskins at quarterback, the future is most certainly NOT now. But it has to start somewhere. The only question is whether he can complete a few passes before he throws a few interceptions.

The kid has had some extra time to practice with the first unit, as Washington is coming off a bye. And they are hosting a team that they think might be accommodating, as the New York Jets, piloted by another confused youngster, come to FedEx Field. Game time is 1 PM ET, televised regionally by CBS, and BetAnySports customers are going to have an opportunity to place wagers before the game begins, thanks to Sports Betting Ultra.

In case you were not following the situation, Jay Gruden, who once upon a time was the head coach, was adamant about the fact that Haskins was not quite ready to get on the field in the NFL. As an architect of his own version of the West Coast offense, he probably wasn’t in favor of drafting him to begin with. But ownership/management likely persisted, as they had when Mike Shanahan was running HIS version of the West Coast offense and they shoved Robert Griffin III down his throat when he preferred to use Kirk Cousins.

As if by spite, Gruden suddenly decided to stick Haskins into a blowout loss to the Giants, and he threw three interceptions. The way things work in the NFL, the first-round kid stays and the rather unsuccessful coach gets the boot. And so Bill Callahan, who took over the head coaching job on an interim basis, has decided – with the help of ownership/management, no doubt – to insert Haskins as his starting quarterback for the rest of the season.

Can things improve?

In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game, the Redskins are favored at home:

Washington Redskins -1
New York Jets +1

Over 38.5 points -110
Under 38.5 points -110

Now that he is committed to Haskins, you’d have to think Callahan would be looking to tailor the offense a little more toward what he can do, which may include getting the ball down the field more. The West Coast scheme is one that he had not been involved with at Ohio State, although Callahan did get to the Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders and Rich Gannon, one of the great West Coast quarterbacks.

So the kid is going to make mistakes. He is going to misread coverages. He is going to throw the ball to the wrong-colored jersey.

But unlike Callahan, he doesn’t appear to be in the position on an “interim” basis. One has to wonder whether Urban Meyer, who has been dropping hints about being interested in another coaching job, might be convinced to seek the Redskins’ job. After Haskins had been drafted, Meyer was asked about how he might do in Washington. He said that the kid should do very well, if he was with the right people and with the right offense. It sounded like a dig at Gruden and his scheme.

If you’re the Jets, you’d be looking to take away the running game and force Haskins to beat them with his arm, freeing him up to make a lot of mistakes. For example, he appears to be an ideal candidate to have the ball taken away on a sack, like Jamal Adams did to Daniel Jones last week. We know that Callahan, an offensive line guru, is going to be bullish on the run, but Gang Green can stuff that; they allow three yards a carry and really bottled up Saquon Barkley. (13 carries, ONE yard).

Will the Jets be a little let down? Yeah, I know that sounds funny for a team with two wins, but they are coming off games against Miami (which was emotionally-charged) and the hated Giants. So you could say the Redskins have the scheduling edge.

But Adam Gase’s squad has the matchup edge, and maybe – just maybe – the quarterback (Sam Darnold) who is a little less combustible.

So yes, we will swallow hard and grab a point in this one.
