Like any sport, the National Basketball Association is a beast of its own. However, there are ways to find some value and make more informed decisions in this sport, just like any other.

Key Numbers

The first step is to identify key numbers. Unlike the football, where three and seven are the most important betting numbers, and unlike hockey and baseball, where lines are always set at 1.5 and adjusted via juice, basketball is a much more fluidly moving spread. However, there are some key numbers. The most important to look for are four and seven. Four makes a game a two-possession game, and seven makes it a three-possession game. Late into games, seven is usually when the opposition will lay off the gas, and your favorite can feel good. However, in comeback scenarios, if there is still enough time on the clock, seven is when the opposition can really feel it, and the pressure begins to mount on the team with the lead. Seven is also the spread that results in a push the most, so if there is a number worth buying the extra half point in your favor, it would be seven.

Back to Backs

The NBA is cutting back on this because they know the effect on the players. However, favorite, or underdog, it does not matter, teams perform worse on back to back games. In the second game of back to backs in general, it is close to being a winning proposition to bet against that team blindly. However, when looking at the second game of back to back road games, they are close to being a 52% loser all-time. Before betting on or against a team, always look at where they were the night before. It does matter.

Home Court Advantage

It is also important to look at where they are actually playing. Home court advantage does matter, and it does add up over time. Given the air, and the quick in-and-out nature of the NBA schedule, it is no surprise that Denver and Utah historically have the best home-court advantages. Ruccous environments such as Golden State, Sacramento, and Indiana also feature strong home courts. This is important to note because if any of these teams are rolling at home, it is time to fire.
