The inaugural Circa Sports Million has come to a close and Booty Blockers is the winner of $1 million. It has been a tremendously successful first season for the first legitimate competitor to the Westgate SuperContest and the future is really bright for this NFL handicapping tournament.
The $575,000 handed out in quarter prizes was a really big draw in this contest. The best records from Weeks 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, and 13-17 were able to pick up a very nice chunk of change for their efforts and it really gave just about anybody a chance to score some money. Even if the full-season prizes are nothing but a pipe dream, running really well for four weeks gave everybody hope. It was a nice feature and it will be interesting to see how things progress as we go forward.
As expected, the lead for Booty Blockers was just too much for the field to overcome. The winning point total was 58.5. Live Odds had a nice week and got some help to finish alone in second place and take down $100,000 for the full season. TheBetBot.com, SD-2, and MJTADE tied for third place with 56 points. Ace2019 finished sixth with 55.5 points. The Matador 1 made a big push to tie Gamblers Anonymous for seventh with 55 points. Bobby T and MAIB tied for ninth with 54.5 points.
Speaking of big pushes, Tall & Nasty went 20-4-1 to win the fourth quarter prize outright with 20.5 points. We figured it would take somewhere around 20 points to get that final $143,750 over the last five weeks of the contest and it actually took 20.5 to win it outright. There were three entries tied with 20 points, including MAIB, who used that 20-5 run to jump into the top 10. The quarter prize would have been far more lucrative than finishing tied for ninth.
All $1,875,000 in the prize pool was paid out to those that cashed. This was a rake-free contest this season. The guaranteed $1.5 million prize pool became a prize pool of $1.875 million when the expectations for the field went out the window. It looked like there was going to be an overlay in the prize pool with limited early interest, but as the SuperContest field grew, so, too, did the Circa field. Next year’s contest should be even bigger and even better. Great things are happening with Circa Sports and those should leak over into the contests as well.
Our two BangTheBook.com entries had very different results. Overall, it was a pretty solid season for the -1 entry at 46-36-3, though that doesn’t get you paid in contests like these, where the margin for error is totally non-existent. The -2 entry, which belongs to host Adam Burke of BangTheBook Radio, came in at 40-43-2. It was simply too hard to get on the plus side with a couple of 0-5 weeks in there.
Adam did go 3-2 in the final week with winners on the Falcons, Ravens, and Chiefs and losers on the Giants and Packers. The -1 entry went 2-3 in Week 17 with winners on the Titans and Saints and losers on the Colts, Giants, and Steelers.
The Steelers loss decided our season-long dinner bet, as Adam held an 8-4 edge across the two contests and a 4-3 edge in individual games with differences of opinion.
It isn’t where we wanted to finish for these contests, but we are happy that you came along for the ride with us here at BangTheBook and we look forward to seeing what the Circa has in store for next year’s contest.
For the final time, here are the Week 17 results and the year-to-date numbers:
Some issues with the reporting from Circa this week on the pick counts, so I have made some adjustments. The field came in just shy of 54% and checked in at 50.7% for the season, which is quite strong.
The consensus hit at 9-7 with the top-five consensus at 3-2.
