Uncle Mo is arguably the best colt in the field, and the Kentucky Derby odds will likely end up being one of the two morning line favorites as long as he doesn't end up with a far outside post draw.
4-0-1, 5 Races
With Indian Charlie as his father, a fantastic horse from the mid-late 1990s, there is definitely some great breeding here for Uncle Mo to work with, and the question of distance for these Triple Crown races shouldn't come into play... maybe...
The biggest question that horse has right now is how questionable he looked in his most recent race at the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in April. He led basically from wire to the stretch, but was nipped by up and coming Toby's Corner and ended up basically giving up on the race in the final few strides. This was the first time that Uncle Mo ran more than 1 1/6 miles in his career (not that that is a strange thing for these three year olds), and it was unclear whether it was a matter of a bad race, a matter of distance being an issue, or a matter of it just getting beaten by a better horse.
One thing is for sure, and that's that trainer, Todd Pletcher is really going to do everything that he can to make sure that Uncle Mo is ready and raring to go in this race. He has been the undisputed favorite in every race that he has run in his career, including at the coveted Breeder's Cup Juvenile last year when he blew away a rock solid side at a price of 1.40.
The choice of John Velazquez as the mount for this race is a questionable one considering his history. Velazquez has never ridden a horse to the bed of roses before in his career, though he does have a Kentucky Oaks win in 2004. This is going to be his 12th Kentucky Derby, and his best finish was a second place outing in 2001. However, Velazquez is the only jockey that this colt knows, and obviously, there has been a huge degree of success i the marriage between the two. Pletcher has himself a real monster here that he is bringing to Churchill Downs, and whether this turns out to be the favorite or not, Uncle Mo is almost certainly the most likely horse to end up winning a Triple Crown this year.
