French Ligue 1 Match of the Day Round 6 – Lyon vs. Marseille (9/23/18)

Lyon experienced a slow start to the season in France but they will be looking to return to the winning ways following a big upset of Manchester City on the road in the opening round of the Champions League. The game between Lyon and Marseille will take place at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on September 23rd, 2018.

Three-Way: 1: Lyon -105; X: +250 Draw; 2: Marseille +280 at BetDSI Sportsbook

Spread -0.5: Lyon +102; Marseille -130

Total 3 goals: Over -108; Under -112

The hosts have not had a very good start to the season, registering only two wins in their first five Ligue 1 matches (W2, D1, L2) while going winless in each of their past two contests. However, Lyon is coming off the back of an impressive 2-1 away win over Manchester City in the Champions League and they will try to translate that impressive form into the 2018/19 Ligue 1 season, where they host Marseille this Sunday.

Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir shocked the Citizens with first-half goals and although Pep Guardiola’s side cut the deficit to one through Bernardo Silva in the 67th minute, it wasn’t enough to avoid a 2-1 defeat. Lyon secured important three points that should help them in the hunt for the UCL Round of 16 spot in the group alongside Man City, Shakhtar, and Hoffenheim.

Betting Trends:

  • Only one of Lyon’s five Ligue 1 matches has seen both sides scoring
  • Four of Lyon’s five Ligue 1 contests have had under 2.5 goals scored

Marseille have fared a bit better in the league with three wins out of five games (W3, D1, L1) and sit in second place with ten points, five behind the league leaders, PSG. It is still early in the season, but Marseille already look quite threatening!

Still, they suffered an unexpected 2-1 home defeat to Frankfurt in the opening round of the Europa League, despite the fact that they had an extra man for the final 30 minutes of the tilt. The Olympians took an early 1-0 lead through Lucas Ocampos in the 3rd minute but Lucas Torro in the 52nd and the substitute Luka Jovic in the 89th minute gave the Germans a surprising victory.

Betting Trends:

  • All of Marseille’s five Ligue 1 matches thus far have seen over 3.5 goals scored
  • Marseille scored in each of the previous 11 Ligue 1 games

The recent H2H record between both sides shows an edge for Lyon, who has won the last three while going undefeated in their past eight against Marseille (W4, D4). The all-time record between these two sides shows near-parity. Lyon has a record of W34, D40, L30. They have also scored 159 goals while conceding 161. Four out of the last eight H2H encounters ended as a draw, and although that didn’t occur in the past four, I am backing a draw on this one.

MY PICK: Draw +250

ADDITIONAL PICK: Lyon scored at least two goals in each of their last three meetings against Marseille and all of those matches ended in a win for them. Only two out of the previous nine H2H games produced more than three goals, but despite that fact, I am backing both teams to score and over 2.5 goals here.

MY PICK: BTTS and Over 2.5 goals (-125)
