French Ligue 1 Match of the Day Round 22 – PSG vs. Rennes (1/27/19)

The reigning champions and the best team in France cannot relax against the visitors who knew to upset them in Paris in the previous years, as it was the case the last season. The game between PSG and Rennes will take place at the Parc des Princes on January 27th, 2019.

Three-Way: 1: PSG -455; X: +550 Draw; 2: Rennes +1100 at BetDSI Sportsbook

Spread -2: PSG +100; Rennes -110

Total 3.5 goals: Over +100; Under -120

PSG remain unbeaten this season in the French top flight (W17, D2), and unsurprisingly possess Ligue 1’s most potent attack (62 scored) and meanest defense (ten conceded). With a huge 23 points currently separating them from opponents Rennes, the defending French champions will feel well justified in their favorites tag for this clash.

The Parisians have won all ten of their L1 home matches this term – leading at half-time in seven – whilst scoring a league-high 37 goals in the process. Furthermore, Thomas Tuchel’s side has registered a clean sheet in seven of those fixtures.

Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria scored in a 2-0 home victory over Strasbourg in the 1/16 finals of the Coupe de France but they lost Neymar who suffered an ankle injury and the Brazilian is in jeopardy to miss the Champions League clash with Manchester United, and of course, he will not play against Rennes as well.

Thomas Tuchel also cannot count on Marco Verratti (suspension), while Presnel Kimpembe (groin) and Layvin Kurzawa (illness) are listed as doubtful to face Rennes on Sunday.

Betting Trends:

  • KylianMbappé has netted more L1 goals (17) than the whole Rennes squad have scored away from home this season (16)
  • Eight of PSG’s ten Ligue 1 home matches have featured over 2.5 goals; six have seen over 3.5

Rennes will be no pushovers, something they showed in their last visit to the Parc des Princes when they ran out 2-0 winners last season. Currently two points better off than they were at this stage in 2017/18, Les Rouges et Noirs have traveled well this term, picking up three victories in their last five L1 away games (W3, D1, L1), whilst hitting the back of the net in every away league outing so far.

The visitors have also been losing just once at half-time across their 11 L1 away matches (HT: W4, D6, L1), but have conceded a worrying 75% of their away goals after the break (12/16). Rennes was also successful in the 1/16 finals of the Cup as they beat minnows Saint-Pryve on the road thanks to goals from TheosonSiebatcheu and Adrien Hunou.

Julien Stephan will be without Ludovic Baal (muscle), Romain Danze (knee), and RafikGuitane (knee), while Ramy Bensebaini is listed as questionable with a leg injury.

Betting Trends:

  • Returning from injury, midfielder Adrien Hunou scored in Rennes’ midweek cup victory, while he also netted in his side’s famous win over PSG last season
  • Rennes scored the majority of their Ligue 1 away goals (56%) during the first half

PSG won nine of the last ten H2H encounters with Rennes including the latest one that was played this season, 3-1 in Rennes, but Rennes surprised the champions last time they visited the Parc des Princes thanks to goals from Benjamin Bourigeaud and Adrien Hunou. I don’t think they will get a victory in this one but without key players such as Neymar and Verratti, I also don’t think PSG will destroy Rennes here, and that’s why I am backing the visitors to cover the +2 spread.

MY PICK: AH +2 Rennes (-110)

ADDITIONAL PICK: Even seven out of the last ten H2H duels produced more than three goals including the one played this year and the hosts shouldn’t have problems scoring three goals in this one, while Rennes scored against PSG in four of the previous five encounters, and I am backing over 3.5 goals at the +100 odds.

MY PICK: Over 3.5 (+100)
