Starting Pitchers- Phillies (Lee) vs. Braves (Hudson)
The Phillies and the Braves will see a lot of each other this year. The first meeting of the year will take place in Atlanta on Friday, and this one is a matchup of two great starting pitchers. The Phillies have started the season red hot, but the Braves lost three in a row in Milwaukee and are now just 3-4.
The starting rotation that the Phillies have this year is absolutely tremendous. A rotation with guys like Lee, Hamels, and Oswalt as your number two through four starters is absolutely stacked. You could make a good argument that the Phillies have four of the top 10 or 15 pitchers in all of baseball. What about the lineup? There has been quite a bit of concern because they are missing Chase Utley, but this is still a very good lineup. Victorino, Polanco, Rollins, Howard, Ibanez, and the rest of the Philadelphia hitters should be able to more than hold their own while they wait for Utley to heal. In fact, the Phillies have piled up 10 and 11 runs in their last two games.
It feels a little different in Atlanta this year without Bobby Cox in the dugout, but this team has quite a bit of talent. The Atlanta Braves can’t match the Phillies overall starting pitching rotation, but neither can anyone else in baseball. Atlanta has a very solid starting rotation that should help them stay in contention this year. Tim Hudson had one of the best years of his highly successful career last season. Hudson finished 2010 with an ERA of just 2.83. The Braves lineup is lacking a little bit of pop, and they are going to need some of their young guys to step up this year. Jason Heyward is a budding star, and you can certainly expect to see a lot of highlights from him this year.
I think both pitchers will come ready for this big matchup. Anytime you can get Cliff Lee and the Phillies at just about even money, I think it is really tough to pass up. I expect Hudson to pitch well, but I think the Phillies have more depth in their lineup.
