Starting Pitchers- Phillies (Halladay) vs. Nationals (Lannan)

The Nationals took the first game of this three-game series, but now the Phillies have the 2010 CY Young award winner on the mound on Wednesday night. Roy Halladay has an ERA of just 0.69 for the year, and it will be up to the Nationals to figure out a way to try to score some runs off him. This is an improved Washington team, but hitting Halladay will still be a very difficult task.

The Philadelphia Phillies are most people’s favorite to win the World Series because of their amazing pitching staff. It all starts with Roy Halladay as the ace of their staff. Halladay has amazing control and he just knows how to get hitters out. The pleasant surprise for the Phillies so far this year has been the performance of their offense. Victorino, Rollins, Howard, Polanco, and Ruiz are all hitting above .300 on the year thus far. While missing Chase Utley certainly holds this offense back, they are still a very formidable lineup.

The Nationals picked up Jason Werth in the offseason from the Phillies, and he has definitely boosted this offense. Ryan Zimmerman is on the disabled list now, and the team will definitely miss him both on offense and defense. Michael Morse, Ian Desmond, and Adam Laroche are all guys that Washington needs to heat up to help their offensive output. John Lannan is a solid pitcher, but he definitely has a difficult matchup in this one. The Nationals are a team that is on the rise, but they still have quite a ways to go to contend with the best in the league on a daily basis.

John Lannan has not fared well at all against the Phillies in his career. In fact, the Nationals are 0-7 in Lannan’s last 7 home starts against the Phillies. The Phillies are 39-13 in their last 52 meetings with the Nationals. I expect Halladay to pitch another great game here, and I think the Phillies win comfortably. I like the value on the runline in this one.
