Starting Pitchers- Twins (Blackburn) vs. Orioles (Britton)

The Baltimore Orioles started the year out red hot, but after eight straight losses they have fallen back near the bottom of the AL East. They did wallop the Twins last night, but they have still lost eight of their last nine. The Minnesota Twins are short-handed right now, and they have dropped five of their last seven games overall. Both of these teams need to get back on the right track. This matchup will be broadcast nationwide on ESPN.

Joe Mauer is currently on the disabled list with leg weakness, and Justin Morneau has missed the last two games with the flu. Delmon Young also developed the flu and missed Tuesday’s game. Right now, the Twins are playing with a badly depleted lineup. Anytime a team is missing a player the caliber of Joe Mauer it will severely hurt their lineup, but missing Morneau and Young really makes this team struggle to score runs. In the bullpen, Matt Capps has taken over the closing duties from Joe Nathan. Nathan has been struggling to regain his form since coming back from an injury. Until the lineup gets some of its power back, the Twins will be counting on solid starting pitching to help them be competitive.

The Baltimore Orioles finished the year strong under Buck Showalter last year, and they started this season on a winning note as well. What has turned this season south in the last couple weeks? The Orioles simply haven’t been able to hit the baseball. During their eight game losing streak before last night’s win, Baltimore averaged only 2.5 runs per game. The starting rotation has held its own and the bullpen has been improved, but this lineup simply hasn’t produced so far this year. Brian Roberts leads the team in hitting, and he is only batting .266 this year. Mark Reynolds, Nick Markakis, Derrek Lee, Adam Jones, and Matt Wieters are all batting under .225 so far this year. The Orioles are batting just .226 as a team, which is one of the worst averages in all of baseball.

Young prospect Zach Britton will be on the hill for the Orioles and Nick Blackburn will be pitching for the Twins. The Twins are only 17-35 in Blackburn’s last 52 road games, and I think the Orioles will have the upper hand in this game.
