New York Yankees (15-9) vs. Detroit Tigers (12-15) MLB Odds:

Moneyline: Tigers (-121) Yankees (+111)

Over/Under: 8.5

Starting Pitchers: Yankees (Colon) Tigers (Verlander)

The New York Yankees have played 24 games this year and only seven of them have been on the road. They start a road trip in Detroit on Monday night. The Tigers were swept this past weekend in Cleveland by the surprising Indians, who now have the best record in baseball. Justin Verlander, the Tigers ace, will start for Detroit. This game will be nationally televised by ESPN.

The Yankees are 15-9 largely due to the fact that they have scored more runs than anyone in baseball. New York is averaging 5.56 runs per game, and they also have 46 home runs, which is tops in the majors as well. Everyone knew this team would hit the ball, but the starting pitchers have done a nice job keeping them in the game as well. Bartolo Colon has allowed just three runs in his two starts this year. The Yankees bullpen has been good this year, and if the starting rotation is at least decent, the Yankees will be tough to beat this year.

The Tigers lost three straight heartbreaking games in Cleveland. The Tigers were ahead late in all three games, only to be swept in the three-game series. Justin Verlander has been the guy who has stopped slumps for them before, and he will be counted on to tame a tough Yankees lineup on Monday night. Victor Martinez is currently on the disabled list, and the Tigers offense has certainly been affected by his absence. Miguel Cabrera is putting up big numbers already this year, but the Tigers need leadoff hitter Austin Jackson to get it going like he did last year.

While Colon has pitched very well in his first two starts this year, I’m not sure he can keep it up over the long haul. On the other hand, Verlander is great at home and the Tigers are 4-1 in his last 5 home starts against the Yankees. It isn’t often that the Tigers are such short favorites at home with Verlander on the mound. I think Detroit is the play here.
