Boston Red Sox -135
Tampa Bay Rays +115
Total 7.5o -115

The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays continue their three-game series at Tropicana Field tonight with the Rays holding the 1-0 edge in this AL East showdown. Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast on the MLB Network.

Boston’s nine game winning streak came to a crashing halt with a 4-0 loss last night as a 118 road underdog. The total stayed well ‘under’ the 8.5 line. The loss dropped the Red Sox to 39-27 overall and cut their lead over New York in the division to 1.5 games. They are 19-13 at home and 20-14 on the road.

Tuesday night was the first time that Boston was shutout since a 3-0 loss to Detroit at the end of May. Between those two blankings, the Red Sox have averaged 8.1 runs in the 12 games they have played. Josh Beckett will get the start in tonight’s game. He is 5-2 this season with a miniscule 2.06 ERA in 13 starts. This will be the first time Beckett has faced the Rays this season, but lifetime against them he is 7-4 with a 3.43 ERA.

Last night’s win was Tampa’s sixth in its last eight games. The Rays are now just 3.5 games in back of Boston with an overall record of 36-31. They are 21-15 on the road, but just 15-16 at home.

Tampa Bay’s hitting has been very average this season as it is stuck in the middle of the AL rankings in both team batting average and runs scored. Pitching has been much more consistent with a solid 3.69 team ERA. Jeremy Hellickson will be on the mound tonight for the Rays. He is 7-4 in 12 previous starts with a 3.03 ERA. Last time out he gave up five earned runs on seven hits in a loss to Baltimore.

Head-to-head, the Rays have now won three straight this season with the total staying ‘under’ in the last two. Look for Boston to snap this skid tonight as Beckett continues to pitch well and the Red Sox bats respond to last night’s shutout.
