Milwaukee Brewers (39-31) vs. Boston Red Sox (41-27) MLB Betting Lines
Moneyline: Red Sox (-114) Brewers (+104)
Starting Pitchers: Brewers (Marcum) vs. Red Sox (Lackey)
Who would have imagined after their miserable first week that the Boston Red Sox would have the best record in the American League at this point in the season? The Red Sox are a game and a half up on the Yankees in the American League East. Milwaukee was just beaten in three out of four games at Wrigley Field, but the Brewers have been the hottest team in the National League of late as well. Milwaukee is 23-10 in their last 33 games overall. Boston is 39-17 in their last 56 games overall. This should be a great battle in Boston on Friday night!
Shaun Marcum will start for the Brewers. I think Marcum is one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball right now. Marcum has a 2.68 ERA in 2011, and he has a stellar 1.38 ERA on the road this year. The Brewers have two absolute superstars in Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. It’s hard to find another team with two hitting stars as good as these two. Braun is hitting .312 with 15 homers and 51 RBI’s this year. Fielder is hitting .297 with 19 homers and 59 RBI’s. While these two are clearly the best, this offense is deep. Rickie Weeks, Corey Hart, Casey McGhee, and Jonathan Lucroy have proven fully capable of producing at a high rate.
Boston rallied to win the final two games in Tampa Bay. The Red Sox have now won eleven of their last twelve games overall! There have been two keys to the Red Sox success of late. First, the Red Sox are hitting the ball far better than anyone else in baseball. Secondly, the Red Sox are playing terrific defense at every position. Offensively it has been Adrian Gonzalez having a MVP type season so far in 2011. Gonzalez has already racked up an amazing 61 RBI’s. David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury are both batting .314 on the year, and Carl Crawford has gotten out of his early season slump in the last few weeks. This team has speed and power and it should come as no surprise that they are leading the majors in batting average.
John Lackey has been bad so far this year, and the Brewers have the type of team that should be able to make him pay for his mistakes. I like Marcum and he gives the Brewers a big pitching advantage here.
