New York Yankees (69-42) vs. Boston Red Sox (68-43) MLB Betting Lines from BetOnline
Moneyline: Yankees (-150) Red Sox (+140)
Starting Pitchers: Yankees (Sabathia) vs. Red Sox (Lackey)
The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox came into this pivotal three game series tied atop the AL East Standings. The Red Sox were 8-1 in the first nine meetings this year with the Yankees. On Friday night, it was the Yankees who won a hard fought first game in Boston by a score of 3-2. The Yankees got to Jon Lester just enough to pull off a victory, and the bullpen was perfect. The ace of the Yankees staff will go Saturday, so this is a chance for the Yankees to try to put a little distance between them and the Red Sox.
C.C. Sabathia has a stellar 16-5 record and a 2.55 ERA this year. Sabathia has improved as the season has gone along. In his past five starts against the Red Sox, the Yankees are just 1-4, so he will look to improve on that record. While many of the Yankees batters experienced a slow start to the season, just about all of them are red hot right now. Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner, and Derek Jeter have all been kicking it into gear over the last couple months. Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira continue to smash out home runs in ridiculous numbers. The Yankees are second in runs scored per game, and they are sixth in team ERA.
John Lackey will start for the Red Sox in this one. Lackey has been much maligned of late because of his poor efforts this season. For the year, Lackey has a very poor ERA of 6.23. Lackey has started just once against the Yankees this year. He allowed six runs in five innings in that outing. Adrian Gonzalez continues to lead the majors in batting average and RBI’s. Most experts believe he is the clear favorite to win the American League MVP. Jacoby Ellsbury has shown improved power this season, and he continues to hit for a great average and steal bases. Josh Reddick has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Sox in right field. Reddick is hitting .343 on the season. Boston is first in the majors in runs scored, and they are 17th in team ERA.
The Red Sox hit left-handers very well, and they have proven they can get to Sabathia. Lackey has been very hittable all year, and I have to think the Yankees will put up several runs. I like the over.
