The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox renew their long standing rivalry this Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game set at Fenway Park. Game time for this AL East clash is set for 3:05 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on the MLB Network.
Heading into this Thursday’s series finale against Minnesota, the Yankees have battled their way to a 6-6 record, which is not the start they envisioned in their quest for another division title. They are 3-3 both at home and on the road and 2-3 in their last five games.
Hitting has not been the problem in the early going with 62 runs in its first 12 games, but New York’s pitching has been way off the mark with a team ERA of 4.36. Ivan Nova is slated to get the start in the series opener. He is 2-0 on the year with an ERA of 4.15 and has now won 14 straight decisions dating back to June of last season. Nova is 0-2 against the Red Sox with a 6.62 ERA.
Boston is also off to a less than stellar start with a 4-8 record that includes a three-game sweep at the hands of Texas earlier this week in which it was outscored 25-6. The Red Sox are now just 1-5 on the road but an even 3-3 at home.
Much like New York, hitting has not been the issue as Boston is right behind the Bronx Bombers in total runs scored with 59. The Red Sox pitching has been downright awful with a team ERA of 6.20, which is the highest in the American League. They will send Clay Buchholz to the mound in this one. In two previous starts, he has given-up 12 earned runs on 14 hits in 11 innings of work. Lifetime against the Yankees, Buchholz is 2-3 with 5.59 ERA.
The Yankees are 3-7 in their last 10 games against the AL East but 7-2 in Nova’s last nine starts on the road. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of Nova’s last eight starts overall.
The Red Sox are 11-24 in their last 35 games against the division and 9-24 in their last 33 games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of their last six games.
New York is 6-14 in the last 20 meetings and 4-5 in its last nine trips to Fenway. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the last seven games.
Stick with the Yankees to draw first blood in this season’s series as Nova extends his winning streak to 15 in another slugfest. The Free MLB Pick: New York 6 Boston 4
