Moneyline: New York (-185) Detroit (+165)
This is a series between two teams who are expected to be the best in the American League this year. It could be a preview of the ALCS. The Yankees took the first game in walk off fashion, but the Tigers came back and won yesterday. Who will win the rubber match in this series? TBS will televise this terrific matchup.
Detroit had actually lost five straight games before yesterday’s win over the Yankees. The Tigers have slumped as their offense hasn’t lived up to expectations. Still, I think it is far too early to judge this team. This is an extremely loaded offense that is bound to put up some big run totals over the course of the season. Miguel Cabrera leads the team with 7 home runs and 19 RBI’s. Prince Fielder leads the team with a .312 batting average. Jhonny Peralta, Brennan Boesch, and Alex Avila are all struggling so far this season.
Max Scherzer has been terrible so far this year for the Tigers. Scherzer has given up 30 hits in less than 20 innings pitched. He is still racking up the strikeouts, but Scherzer has been getting hit around. Detroit is 20th in the majors in team ERA at 4.16. Their starters only have 10 quality starts so far this year.
New York tried to rally in the ninth inning yesterday, but it was too little too late. The Yankees offense has hit 34 home runs already this year, which is the best mark in the majors. The offense is averaging 5.60 runs per game. Derek Jeter is off to an amazing start. Jeter is hitting .386 with 4 homers and 13 RBI’s. Nick Swisher hit two more home runs yesterday, and he has six home runs and 23 RBI’s so far in 2012. New York has a very feared lineup, and I expect big things from this offense this year.
C.C. Sabathia is the Ace of this pitching staff, but he hasn’t been on his game so far this year. Sabathia has an ERA of 5.27 in 2012. He has been logging a lot of innings for the team, but Sabathia has already given up four home runs. The Yankees are 26th in the majors with a team ERA of 4.62. The team has gotten only five quality starts all season.
The Yankees are an impressive 38-14 in Sabathia’s last 52 home starts. They are 27-5 in his last 32 starts as a favorite of -151 to -200. The Tigers are 4-0 in Scherzer’s last 4 starts against the Yankees. The Yankees are 4-0 in Sabathia’s last 4 starts against the Tigers. Both pitchers are struggling right now, and I think the offense will score in bunches here.
