Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN will feature the teams that most expected to duel it out for the AL West title this year. The Angels were the slight favorite before the season in the division after their huge offseason acquisitions, but they have struggled horribly. Texas has been dominating with their terrific offense. The Angels won 4-2 last night. Can they win a second straight or will the Rangers bounce back in this one?
No team made a bigger splash in the offseason than the Angels. Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson were the biggest signings. Wilson has pitched well, and he picked up the win last night. Pujols is batting .195 with just one home run. The entire Angels offense has been terrible in 2012. Howard Kendrick is batting .292, but no one else has been consistent. Mike Trout has given the offense a bit of a spark of late. The Angels have won five of their last eight games.
Jered Weaver has arguably been the best pitcher in baseball so far this year. He pitched a no-hitter on May 2, and he has five straight quality starts. Weaver is 5-0 with a 1.61 ERA this season. He has just nine walks compared to 47 strikeouts. He has struggled in Arlington in the past. He has a 4.33 career ERA at Texas. Can the Rangers get to him this time?
Neftali Feliz will start for the Rangers in this one. Feliz was one of the best closers in the league the last couple years, but the Rangers moved him to the rotation this year after Wilson left for Los Angeles. Feliz is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA on the season. He has already notched one complete game. The one issue he has had is his control. Feliz has issued 16 free passes in 32 innings so far this year. Texas may have the deepest bullpen in baseball, and that has really helped them win a lot of close games.
Josh Hamilton has been ridiculously good this year for the Rangers. He has been the best player in the majors so far this season. Hamilton is hitting .402 with 18 home runs, including eight in the last five games! He leads the majors with 41 RBI’s. Texas has a great lineup from top to bottom. The Rangers lead the majors in just about every offensive category. They are averaging 5.71 runs per game.
The Angels are 19-7 in Weaver’s last 26 starts. On the other hand, they are just 2-7 in Weaver’s last 9 starts at Texas.
The Rangers are 43-19 in their last 62 home games. Texas is 9-2 in their last 11 Sunday games.
The under is 8-2-1 in the Angels last 11 road games. The under is 6-0 in the Rangers last 6 Sunday games.
Free MLB Pick: Rangers ML
It’s not fun going against Weaver, but the Rangers lineup is much better than the Angels right now.
