One of the best parts about Interleague baseball is that intra-city rivalries bring an extra enthusiasm to the game. The city of Chicago loves its baseball, and this rivalry has really turned into a passionate one. Ask any Cubs fan and they’ll tell you they hate the White Sox, and White Sox fans definitely hate the Cubs. The White Sox won the opening game of this series yesterday. Can the Cubs even up the series with their best pitcher on the mound?
The White Sox weren’t expected to do much this season, but they have been decent in the early going. The players who really let them down last year have bounced back in a big way so far in 2012. Adam Dunn had a miserable year in 2011, but he leads the team with 12 homers and 30 RBI’s this year. Alex Rios has been solid so far this season as well. Paul Konerko has been the team’s best hitter yet again, but he had to leave yesterday’s game and his status for this one is uncertain.
John Danks started opening day for the White Sox, but he has struggled all season. Danks has an ERA of 6.46 this year. He has a WHIP of 1.61, so he has been working with runners on base almost constantly. The Cubs hit just .226 against lefties, so we’ll see how Danks fares against the Cubbies.
Ryan Dempster has had the worst luck of any pitcher in the majors so far this year. Dempster hasn’t picked up a win all season despite a brilliant 1.74 ERA. The bullpen has blown a lead for him multiple times this year. He has a WHIP less than 1, so he has definitely been dominating so far this season.
The Cubs offense has been very disappointing so far in 2012. Last year the team hit for a good average, but they struggled to come up with hits with runners in scoring position. This season the team is just struggling to get on base at all. They are 23rd in the majors in runs scored per game at 3.72 runs. Bryan LaHair has been amazing for the Cubs offense. LaHair is hitting .322 with 10 home runs. Starlin Castro leads the team with a .323 batting average. Ian Stewart has struggled mightily at third base, and Geovany Soto is batting just .161 this year. The Cubs are going to have to start scoring some more runs.
The White Sox are 5-1 in Danks’ last 6 interleague starts. The White Sox are 6-2 in their last 8 games at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs are 1-6 in Dempster’s last 7 starts. They are 1-5 in their last 6 interleague games.
The under is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams at Wrigley Field. The under is 20-8-1 in Dempster’s last 29 starts.
MLB Free Pick:
I like Dempster, but the Cubs have managed to blow numerous games for him this year. The White Sox are a good value at such a big plus number.
