MLB Weekend Series Preview- New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers
Starting this Friday night with Game 1 of a three-game weekend series, the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers clash at Comerica Park in a showdown between two AL preseason favorites that are trying to work their way back to the top of their respective division.
New York comes into this series 6-4 in their last 10 games after dropping two of three this week to the Los Angeles Angels. The Yankees are now 27-23 overall and just one game in back of Tampa Bay and Baltimore in the AL East. They are 14-11 at home this season and 13-12 on the road.
Detroit finishes-up a four-game set against Boston this Thursday having already lost the first three. The Tigers are 4-6 in their last 10 and 5.5 games back in the AL Central with an overall record of 23-27. They are 12-15 on the road and 11-12 at home.
Friday, June 1
CC Sabathia vs. Casey Crosby
The Yankees’ ace is coming off a solid outing against Oakland in which he gave-up two runs in seven innings to notch the win. The left-hander is now 6-2 on the year with an ERA of 3.66 and a 1.22 WHIP. He is 16-12 with a 4.46 ERA lifetime against the Tigers.
Crosby will be making his first Major League start after compiling a 23-14 record in his five seasons in the minors. This season, the left-hander was 4-2 with an ERA of 4.26 in nine starts. He is replacing an injured Doug Fister in Detroit’s rotation.
Saturday, June 2
Hiroki Kuroda vs. Rick Porcello
Kuroda is 4-6 with a 3.96 ERA overall, but coming off one of his best starts of the season. He scattered four hits over eight scoreless innings to get the win over Oakland. The right-hander was just 2-3 with an ERA of 4.25 in his previous five starts.
Porcello had his start bumped back to give him an extra day’s rest after taking a ball of his leg this past Sunday. The right-hander is 3-4 this season with a 5.21 ERA. He has just one win in his last five starts and has given-up 13 earned runs in his last four starts. Porcello is 2-2 with a 5.56 ERA against New York.
Sunday, June 3
Phil Hughes vs. Justin Verlander
Hughes gave-up a season-high seven runs on 11 hits in his last start but came away with a no-decision. The right-hander was 3-2 in his previous six outings and is now 4-5 on the year with an ERA of 5.65. He is 4-3 against the Yankees with a 4.54 ERA.
The Tigers’ ace suffered back-to-back losses in his last two starts after giving-up a combined seven earned runs on 16 hits. He is now 5-3 overall with an ERA of 2.55 and a 0.89 WHIP in 11 previous starts. Verlander is 4-3 against the Yankees with a 4.16 ERA.
The Yankees are 9-4 in the first game of their last 13 series and 6-2 in their last eight games on grass. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of their last eight games against the AL Central.
The Tigers are 15-7 in their last 22 home games against a team with a winning record. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last seven games against the AL East.
