MLB Weekend Series Preview- New York Yankees vs. New York Mets

The 2012 MLB Interleague schedule closes things out this weekend with the second edition of the Subway Series between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. The Yankees dominated at home the first time around this season with a three-game sweep, but the Mets now face their crosstown rivals in the friendly confines of Citi Field for another three games starting this Friday.


Despite back-to-back losses to Atlanta, the Yankees remain one of the hottest teams in the Majors with a 14-4 record in the month of June. They are currently 41-27 overall and 2.5 games ahead of Baltimore for the lead in the AL East. The Yankees are 21-13 on the road this year.

The Mets are coming off a three-game sweep of the Orioles to move to 38-32 and just three games behind Washington in the NL East. They are under .500 on the road this season at 16-17 but a healthy 22-15 at home.

Andy Pettitte vs. Jon Niese

Pettitte’s return has rejuvenated a Yankees’ starting rotation that was in desperate need of a boost. The veteran left-hander is 3-2 in seven previous starts with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. He has given-up a total of four earned runs in his last three starts. Pettitte is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.53 against the Mets.

Niese is 4-3 this season with a 3.82 ERA in 13 starts. The left-hander gave-up four earned runs on six hits his last time out in a loss to Cincinnati after holding the Yankees scoreless while scattering seven hits in seven innings in his previous start. Lifetime against the Yankees he is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA.


Saturday, June 23

Ivan Nova vs. Chris Young

Nova extended his current winning streak to five by holding the Nationals to just one run on seven hits this past Sunday. The right-hander is 9-2 overall with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He is 1-0 with a 3.09 in limited action against the Mets.

Since his return from shoulder surgery, Young has made three starts and is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA. The right-hander went seven innings his last time out and despite holding the Reds to three runs still got tagged with the loss. He is 1-0 against the Yankees with a 6.23 ERA.


Sunday, June 24

CC Sabathia vs. RA Dickey

The Yankees’ ace is coming off his first complete game of the year. Sabathia held Atlanta to two earned runs on seven hits to raise his record to 9-3. The left-hander has an ERA of 3.55 and a WHIP of 1.23 in 14 starts. He is 3-1 with a 3.55 ERA lifetime against the Mets.

There is no pitcher hotter right now than Dickey. He is coming off back-to-back one-hitters in his last two starts to raise his MLB-best record to 11-1. The right-hander has an overall ERA of 2.00 and is 6-0 with a ridiculous 0.18 ERA in his last six starts. Dickey is 3-1 against the Yankees with a 2.30 ERA.
