The Detroit Tigers could be on the verge of the World Series if they can take this MLB betting battle on Tuesday night against the New York Yankees.
The Yankees know that they are in a heck of a lot of trouble. They don't have Derek Jeter any longer, Alex Rodriguez is under a tremendous amount of criticism, Curtis Granderson can't hit the backside of a barn, and Robinson Cano has broken the record for the most consecutive at bats without a hit in a single postseason. Now to make matters worse, New York has to go against one of the best pitchers in the league, and it doesn't exactly have its best option out there either. Phil Hughes has a lousy chance of winning this game. He did pitch well in his first start in the playoffs, allowing just one run on four hits in 6.2 innings of work five days ago. He did win 16 games over the course of the season, and he struck out 165 men in 191 innings of work. Hughes hasn't thrown more than 102 pitches in a game since August, and without the ability to throw over 100 pitches, the bullpen could be overworked once again.
Detroit is up two games in this series already, and it knows that this series should be said and done with. Though there is still a problem with the bullpen, especially at the back end with Jose Valverde losing his job as the closer for the time being. However, the man of the hour is going to be Justin Verlander in this one. Verlander knew that he was going to have to go the distance in Game 5 against the Oakland Athletics, and he did just that. Verlander is just a freakish horse, and he threw 238.1 innings this year. Getting to 100 pitches is routine for the righty, and over the course of his most recent five starts, he has thrown 122, 121, 117, 114, and 122 pitches. In the last four, Verlander has 11, 11, eight, and eight strikeouts as well, and that's going quite a long ways as to why he is one of the most dominating pitchers in the game and might win the Cy Young Award this year.
We're sorry, but we think that the time is here to turn the lights out on the Yankees. Verlander just isn't going to get beaten at this point in the season, especially against a team that just can't hit the ball at the moment. Expect a complete game out of Verlander, and he might have a shutout to show for his work. Detroit 4 – New York 0
