New York Yankees
New York Mets
Empire State rivals do battle for the second time this season, and the New York Mets and New York Yankees renew their annual feud with one another in MLB betting action. The Yanks walked out of Citi Field with a strong 2-1 victory on Friday night courtesy of LF Kevin Russo's two run double in the seventh inning. Now, manager Jerry Manuel, who is certainly sitting squarely on the coaching hot seat, has to pick up the pieces and rebound on Saturday night.
Game 1 was the Mets' best chance at taking a game in this series, as now that the Yanks have used their fifth (and arguably, their sixth) starter, they are firing back with their most efficient pitcher to date, RHP Philip Hughes. Hughes has really only had one bad start this year, as he allowed five runs in as many frames against the Red Sox in his most recent outing. Aside from that, he has been stellar; he is 5-0 with a 2.25 ERA this season. Hughes' K/9 ratio of 8.59 is incredible for a starting pitcher, and that is courtesy of the fact that he has fanned at least six batters in five of his seven starts.
RHP Mike Pelfrey was arguably the best pitcher in baseball in the month of April, and though his numbers for the season are still solid, his month of May certainly hasn't been anything to write home about. Pelfrey is 5-1 with a 3.02 ERA this year, but in the month of May, he is only 1-1 with a 5.47 ERA. The good news for the right-hander is that he is coming off of a great start at Turner Field. He held the Braves to just two runs in 7.2 innings to earn the 3-2 victory for his team. After not allowing a home run in his first four starts (and one relief appearance) on the season, Pelfrey has now given up three dongs in his L/4 starts.
There's no reason not to keep rolling with the Yankees. It seems like it is only a matter of time until Manuel gets the boot, and until he does, the boys from Flushing just don't feel like a team that we should be backing with any sort of regularity. Hughes and the Bronx Bombers should take Game 2 of the Subway Series at Citi Field.
