Fox Saturday baseball betting action heads to Arlington for a duel in the Lone Star State between the Chicago Cubs and the Texas Rangers. The hosts took Game 1 of this series 2-1 courtesy of six straight innings of work by RHP Colby Lewis and three spotless frames from the bullpen. The Rangers opened up a four game lead in the AL West with the victory, while the Cubs fell to six games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the pole position in the NL Central.
On Saturday night, Manager Lou Piniella will trot RHP Randy Wells to the bump for the ninth time this season. Unfortunately for Wells, he hasn't been the winner in a game all month long in spite of the fact that he has a 2.45 ERA in his L/2 starts overall and has struck out 11 batters in that stretch. Wells is 3-2 with a 4.13 ERA on the season, and he has given Chicago everything that it could've asked of him. Wells has a solid 3.9 K/BB ratio, and as a result, his WHIP is a sturdy 1.31 in spite of the fact that opposing batters are hitting .276 against him.
LHP Derek Holland will be making his third start of the year on Saturday. He'll hope that the end result is the same as his first two starts. Holland captured victories at home against both the Halos and A's on May 12th and 17th respectively. He has a 2.38 ERA and has struck out ten batters in 11.1 innings of work against just three walks. The home run ball came back to bite him a bit against Anaheim last week. The Angels knocked a pair of homers off of Holland, giving him a whopping 28 homers allowed in his 35 career appearances (23 starts). This will be the first time that the 23 year old will face the Cubs in his career.
The Cubs may not be playing great baseball, but we're not ready to back Holland laying this type of chalk. Wells' numbers show that there is room for improvement, and we like the price that we're getting on the visitors in this one today. At some point, Chicago has to start to turn it around. There's no better time to do that than today.
