NL East rivals meet in Flushing on Saturday in one of the FOX Saturday MLB betting battles of the week, as the Washington Nationals pay a visit to the New York Mets.
The Nationals enter this series with the Mets in suspect form. Yes, they took two out of three from the Miami Marlins, but any loss to the Marlins nowadays raises some questions. Prior to that, Washington was dominated at home by the Atlanta Braves in three straight losses, losing those three by a combined score of 18-5. LHP Gio Gonzalez pitched well in his first two starts of the year, but that third start against the aforementioned Braves was a horror. The lefty allowed seven runs in just five innings of work, and he was run after the fifth inning. Dating back to last year, Gonzalez now has six straight outings that haven't gotten past the sixth inning. He is still one of the premier lefties in the game, but he definitely needs to get control once again of his command, or he is going to get beaten up in this game, and in quite a few games in the near future.
The Mets played well at the outset of the season, but they ran into some real problems when they went West to the Rockies. The weather was atrocious, and it was a huge problem for the team and its pitchers. New York clearly has had to shuffle its staff around, and now, one of the men that had a start snowed out, RHP Jeremy Hefner is going to be on the bump. Hefner ended up pitching in relief on Thursday, throwing 20 pitches and allowing two runs in an inning of work. Now, the righty has given up seven runs in his last four innings of work in his last two appearances. Hefner has already allowed five home runs on the season, and in 10 innings of work, that certainly isn't going to cut it. The offense had better get its act going, but it isn't like that's an impossibility. New York has scored at least six times this season.
The Mets are really in a heck of a lot of trouble here. We really don't think all that much of Gonzalez at the moment, but we do think that he is going to be good enough to get the job done in this one. Hefner has been the lousiest of all of the New York pitchers in this game, and he is going to get run out of the building at home against a very good Washington outfit on Saturday.
