Probable Starters: Porcello (Detroit) vs. Richards (Los Angeles)
Moneyline: Los Angeles -108
The Los Angeles Angels have badly underachieved at the outset of this season, but they are going to get a chance to start to get back on the right track on Saturday afternoon when they try to beat the MLB odds against the Detroit Tigers at Angels Stadium of Anaheim.
Detroit is clearly one of the more powerful teams in the league this year, and if it doesn't find a way to win the AL East this season, it should be ashamed of itself. The offense has done a remarkable job this season, averaging over five runs per game, and the team is batting a whopping .285. With that type of production, even mediocre pitching should be good enough to get the job done. Mediocre is all that RHP Rick Porcello has been this season, and he was even relegated to bullpen duties this past week when he was skipped for his start. Porcello allowed seven runs in his first 10.1 innings of work this year as a starter, and Manager Jim Leyland stuck him back in the bullpen for a long relief stint against the Oakland Athletics last week. Porcello threw two perfect innings, needing just 19 pitches to get the job done in that time, and now he's back starting again.
Meanwhile, the Angels are still trying to figure out how to get their act together this season. 1B Albert Pujols clearly doesn't look totally healthy, OF Josh Hamilton is still batting right around the Mendoza Line, and the pressure is clearly building for this team. This was supposed to be the best team that money could buy in the AL West, and things just haven't played out that way thus far on the campaign. A ton of the starting pitchers have really struggled on the season, and with that being said, Manager Mike Scioscia has some decisions to make. On this day, he is deciding to go with righty, Garrett Richards for his sixth appearance and his second start of the campaign. Richards got a no decision after allowing four runs in 6.1 innings of work against the Houston Astros last time out, and he has now had a full week to prepare for this one. We don't think much of a man that has just six strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work on the campaign, and those four walks aren't helping either.
Both of these offenses might pick today to bust out. The Tigers are surely going to be able to batter Richards for at least a few runs, and perhaps a whole heck of a lot more, and there isn't enough confidence down there in the LA bullpen to pick up the slack. We don't really trust that one stint in the bullpen was enough to get Porcello's confidence back either. We'll take the 'over', even though we need 10 runs to succeed.
