The Mets have already won the first two games of this four-game home-and-home interleague Subway Series with back-to-back 2-1 victories as slight home favorites. They head into Wednesday’s game at Yankee Stadium with a 4-6 record in their last 10 games and an overall record of 20-29. They are 8-12 on the road this season and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine games.
Jeremy Hefner will get the start in Game 3 for the Mets. The right-hander is still searching for his first victory of the year after going 0-5 in his first nine starts. He looked pretty good his last time out by holding Atlanta to two earned runs on three hits in six innings of work, but he still could not come away with a win. Hefner comes into this matchup with a 4.76 ERA and a WHIP of 1.27. This will be his first career start against New York.
The Yankees have to be scratching their heads over the past two games with a total of just two runs after they came into this series averaging 4.18 runs a game. Their pitching has remained fairly solid with the exception of closer Mariano Rivera giving-up a rare walk-off single to Lucas Duda that scored the winning run in Tuesday night’s game. The two losses have dropped New York a game behind Boston in the AL East race at 30-21, but it gets a chance to return home where it has gone 15-9 this year. The total has stayed UNDER in three of the last four games.
It will be David Phelps’ turn in the starting rotation for the Yankees on Wednesday night. He got hit by a ball in his pitching arm his last time out but should be ready to go. The right-hander has won his last two starts to improve to 3-2 on the year with an ERA of 3.96. He has given-up two or less earned runs in four of his last six starts while striking-out 36 batters over the same stretch of games. This will be his first career start against the Mets.

It is hard to see the Mets continuing this success against their city rivals on the road, especially with Hefner getting the start. Look for the Yankees’ bats to finally wake up in familiar surroundings to pound-out the win in this one.
