Probable Starters: ARI - Brandon McCarthy (R) TEX - Justin Grimm (R)
Moneyline: Texas -130
Both the Diamondbacks and host Rangers are heading into the game from an off day, something the Rangers appear to need far more, as the team has dropped three in a row. Meanwhile, Arizona has won three in a row, putting some distance between the Diamondbacks and second-place San Francisco. Two of those wins came at the expense of the Rangers, who dropped both games of a doubleheader on Monday in Phoenix.
Pitching for the Texas Rangers is Justin Grimm, whose 4-3 record and 4.03 ERA don't inspire much confidence. But Grimm is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA at home.
Brandon McCarthy starts for the Diamondbacks, bringing his 2-3 record and 4.36 ERA back to Texas, where he played from 2007 to 2009. But McCarthy is on a hot streak, allowing just one run over his last 24 innings, spanning three starts.
The Rangers Adrian Beltre has owned McCarthy, going 13 for 31 against him, along with two home runs. And McCarthy hasn't faired well in Texas either; he's 0-1 with a 5.71 ERA in his three starts there since leaving the team in 2009.
No one doubts the Rangers offense, which has the second-best run differential in the AL at +51 heading into the game. But the team has sputtered in recent losses, while McCarthy appears to be heating up at the right time.
Meanwhile, Arizona's offense has been good enough for first place, with the 30-22 team bringing a +26 run differential into the game, lead by Paul Goldschmidt, who is having a breakout season in his second full campaign. His .324 average, 12 home runs, and 42 RBI all lead the Diamondbacks.
Given McCarthy's past struggles against Texas, it's not likely that he shuts the Rangers down completely, as the team remains dangerous offensively. However, the Diamondbacks can capitalize against Grimm, one of the weaker links in the Texas pitching staff.
MLB Pick: Arizona +120
