The Chicago White Sox finally broke an eight-game losing streak with a wild win in Seattle on Wednesday afternoon. Oakland comes into this game playing as well as any team in baseball. The Athletics are once again surprising the baseball world. The oddsmakers have installed the Athletics as a small favorite in this one. Let’s take a closer look at this matchup.
The Oakland Athletics are 17-5 in their last 22 games. They are closing in on the Texas Rangers in the American League West standings. Oakland’s offense has exceeded all expectations so far this season. This is an offense that struggled all of last year. Oakland actually was dead last in team batting average almost all of last season. The Athletics are averaging 4.75 runs per game so far this year, which is good enough for 8th best in the majors. Josh Donaldson is hitting .332, and he has provided a huge boost to the lineup. Jed Lowrie was another nice offseason pickup that has helped the team quite a bit. Yoenis Cespedes crushed two homers yesterday, and he is really heating up.
The Athletics have a ton of young talented starting pitchers, and Dan Straily is one of those talented youngsters with top of the rotation stuff. Straily struggled early in the season, but he has had three brilliant starts in a row against quality competition. He started this run by throwing seven shutout innings in Arlington against the Texas Rangers. Oakland has the third best bullpen in the majors by ERA so far this season. It’s been a winning formula for the team in the past.
The White Sox had lost eight straight before pulling off a ridiculous 16th inning win over Seattle yesterday. Chicago grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the 14th before giving up 5 runs to tie in the bottom of 14. Then the White Sox scored two more to win 7-5 in the 16th. Needless to say, the White Sox bullpen was used heavily in that game, so they will certainly be looking for a long outing from starter Jose Quintana in this one. Quintana is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA this year.
Chicago’s offense has really let them down this season. The White Sox are averaging only 3.49 runs per game this year. Adam Dunn leads the team with 13 homers, but he is hitting a miserable .162. Even the normally very reliable Paul Konerko is struggling badly this year. Konerko is batting .233 on the season. Of all the White Sox regulars, Alex Rios has the highest batting average at .286. This offense is going to have to get its act together if the White Sox are going to be competitive in the AL Central this season.
Free Pick: Under 8
Straily has been lights out of late and Quintana is a solid pitcher as well. Look for a low scoring game here.
