Moneyline: Cardinals (-122) Mets (+112)
If you like good pitching matchups you are going to love a matchup of Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals against Matt Harvey from the Mets in this one. Wainwright looks like the Cy Young winner from a few years ago, and Harvey has been the real bright spot for the Mets so far this year. Which team will come out on top in this one?
The St. Louis Cardinals come into this one with the best record in baseball. The Cardinals are 42-22, and they have been getting it done both a great pitching staff and a terrific lineup. Adam Wainwright was one of the most dominant pitchers in the National League in 2010, but an injury held him back in 2011 and much of 2012. Wainwright has regained his old form this year, and that has led him to a 9-3 start with a 2.34 ERA. He has tremendous control and he generally gets ahead in the count. Overall, the Cardinals have a team ERA of 3.18, which is the best mark in the majors.
Offensively, the Cardinals have the best lineup in the National League. Matt Carpenter is hitting .327 in the lead off spot for St. Louis. The middle of the order includes Beltran, Holliday, Craig, and Molina. Yadier Molina leads the National League with a .351 average. Beltran leads the team with 14 homers. There are no easy outs in this lineup. St. Louis is averaging 5.09 runs per game so far this season.
The New York Mets fans haven’t had much to cheer about this year, but Matt Harvey has been superb for this young team. Harvey started only 10 games last year, so this is his first full year in the majors. He is 5-0 with a 2.10 ERA so far this season. That’s really impressive when you consider the fact that he plays for a team with a 23-36 record so far this year. Harvey did leave his last start with some minor back pain, but he is expected to be nearly 100 percent for this start. The Mets need him to work deep into the game, because the Mets bullpen has been one of the worst in baseball.
The Mets offense is dead last in baseball with a miserable .225 batting average. No one expected this offense to be great, but they have been even worse than expected. John Buck started the season like a ball of fire, but he has quickly come back to earth. David Murphy actually leads this team with a .287 average. David Wright is hitting .275, but he has only 8 homers on the year thus far. Ike Davis is in the minors and Ruben Tejada and Lucas Duda have been struggling badly as well. This Mets offense has been a mess.
MLB Free Pick: Under 6.5
This is an extremely low number for a good reason. Both of these pitchers should be dominant. This should be a fun game for people who love great pitching and low scoring games.
