The perennial powerhouse Rangers enter Friday's game in the middle of a heated pennant race with Oakland that has seen several lead changes despite the early calendar date. Having won three of their last four games, Texas will look to continue their success behind the pitching arm of rookie left hander Martin Perez. The 22 year old Venezuelan debuted with the Rangers last season and struggled
to find consistency in 12 outings. He looked much better in his 2013 debut, May 27th at Arizona, when he gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks. Perez has been stellar at the triple-A level this season, posting a 5-1 record and a 1.75 ERA, the type of success he hopes will translate into big league victories.
While mystery veils the Rangers' starter, the success of right hander Shelby Miller has been clear. The young 22 year old right hander has put together a stellar rookie season, boasting an 8-4 record with a 2.08 ERA in 14 starts. An early favorite for National League Rookie of the Year, Miller has been incredibly consistent, allowing three runs or less in 13 of his 14 starts. The former first round pick has been almost unhittable at Busch Stadium where he has compiled a 5-1 record and an unbelievable 0.99 ERA in seven starts.
Shelby Miller is a big reason why the Cardinals hold the best record in baseball and he will prove that again on Saturday when he defeats the Rangers.
