When the Yankees host Tampa Bay for the fourth and final contest of a four-game series on Sunday, they'll call on the young Dominican right hander, Ivan Nova, to make a spot start in place of Phil Hughes. Nova's last big league appearance came on May 29th when he threw five innings of one run relief against the Mets. His last victory came on May 25th when he threw one scoreless inning of relief against Sunday's opponent, the Rays. While the young hurler is struggling to find the success he achieved over the last two seasons, he has to be thrilled with the opportunity to face the Rays. Nova has been at his best against Tampa Bay, posting a 6-1 record with a 2.98 ERA in nine outings.
While the Rays are very familiar with Nova, the Yankees batters will brave the unknown on Sunday as they face rookie Chris Archer. The tall right hander will take the hill at Yankee Stadium for the first time, hoping to pitch deeper into games than he has since being recalled on June 1. Archer has failed to get out of the fifth inning in three of his four starts, posting a 7.10 ERA in those three losses. He'll have his work cut out for him in the hitter's ballpark that is Yankee Stadium.
Ivan Nova and the Yankees get the edge in this one as Nova's familiarity with the Rays and his struggle to keep a spot on the big league roster will push him past Sunday's opponent for a resounding victory.
