Probable Starters: Holland (Texas) vs. Scherzer (Detroit)
Moneyline: Tigers -157
The Texas Rangers are going to try to make some headway on the road on Saturday night in MLB betting action on FOX, as they take on the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Texas has its work cut it out for it in this series offensively, knowing that it is getting some of the best pitchers that the Tigers could throw its way. Last night didn't go well with a 7-2 loss here in Motown, but the hope is that today will be better with LHP Derek Holland on the mound. Holland has led his team to a 12-6 record this year, and his splits suggest that he is the best healthy starting pitcher that the club has to bring to the table. The southpaw has a 3.19 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP this season, and he has managed to eat right around 6.2 innings per game as well. Holland is unlucky not to be a lot better than 7-4 on the season, but the Rangers are slacking offensively in his starts, scoring just 4.5 runs per game.
RHP Max Scherzer has put up one of the best first halves of the season, and the argument could be made that after this start on Saturday, his next start should be Tuesday in the All-Star Game. It's true that he has a ridiculous number of strikeouts with 146 against a relatively miniscule amount of walks (29), but Scherzer is completely overrated at 13-0, and it doesn't take much to figure out how he's doing it. The righty's 3.06 ERA isn't indicative of a man who should have a perfect record at this point in the season, but what's happening is that he is getting a heck of a lot of help from his bullpen and he is getting a ton of run support. Scherzer has gotten an outstanding 6.2 runs of support per game, and his bullpen is pitching so well for him that opponents are only averaging 3.0 runs per game against the team when he is out there as well.
This is an awfully interesting game from the standpoint that we have Scherzer, a man who has still yet to be beaten this year against Holland, a lefty pitcher who has a good history of pitching in games like these. The Tigers have had to face gobs of left-handed pitching over the course of the last week, and the results haven't been good, as foes have won two of the three games when sending out southpaws against Detroit. The Tigers have nothing going against lefties right now, and Holland should be no different. We don't know if Scherzer is going to get his first loss of the season or not, but he certainly isn't getting his 14th win.
