Probable Starters: Sabathia (New York) vs. Dempster (Boston)
Moneyline: Red Sox -135
Two of the most hated rivals in all of baseball are going to be meeting on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball in MLB betting action this week, as the New York Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
There is a lot of heat on the Bronx Bombers right now, as they are still being looked upon as a brutal disappointment being in fourth place in the AL East. However, they are only six games out of the lead in the division, and they are still on a clip to win 87 games on the campaign. The offensive struggles have been clear all season long, but one of the real surprises of the season as well, is how suspect Sunday's pitcher, LHP CC Sabathia has been. Normally speaking, Sabathia would have been throwing the first day out of the All-Star break, but he was pushed back to Sunday because of his struggles early in the season. Sabathia is only 9-8 for the campaign, and he only has a 4.07 ERA. His WHIP is still very respectable at 1.23, and he has led the team to a healthy 12-8 record in his 20 starts, but he just doesn't have the velocity that he is used to having, and batters are catching up to some of his fastballs. Allowing 21 homers in just 20 starts isn't good for a man that has never allowed more than 22 bombs in a season in his career.
The Red Sox are feeling the pressure from the Tampa Bay Rays at the top of the AL East, and if they lose this series and the next one coming up against Tampa Bay, they are going to be feeling the pressure from the Yanks and the Baltimore Orioles as well. That said, Boston still has the most wins in the American League, something that cannot be taken away at this point. The Red Sox are playing well in spite of their woes with their starting pitching, and it is clear that men like Sunday's starter, RHP Ryan Dempster need to get better and get better in a hurry. Dempster has allowed a whopping 1.43 WHIP this season, and that number is up to 1.93 over the course of his last three starts. Dempster's ERA is up to 4.24, and he really hasn't had an outstanding start since June 14th against the Baltimore Orioles. Dempster though, has allowed three runs or fewer in six straight starts at home, though none of those outings were truly phenomenal.
The price on the Yankees is just flat out nuts in this one. Dempster is still a gas can as we see it, and though Sabathia really hasn't pitched well this year, he could be in for a reprieve, knowing that he has a full week off since his last start. Go with the Bronx Bombers to earn a huge series victory on Sunday.
