Game Overview

The Rays shut Boston out 3-0 in Game 1 of this four-game AL East showdown as 125 road favorites but they were hammered 6-2 on Tuesday night as 129 underdogs on the road. The total stayed UNDER in both of those games. With the split, Tampa Bay remains a game and a half behind their bitter rivals in the division with an overall record of 59-42. It is 8-2 in its last 10 games and the total has now stayed UNDER in nine of its last 10 games.

Tampa Bay’s overall pitching has been spectacular during the month of July as the six runs the Rays gave-up in Game 2 were the most since a 6-3 loss to Detroit on June 28. They are ranked fourth in the American League with a staff ERA of 3.79. Tampa Bay will go with David Price as its starter for Wednesday night. The left-hander is 4-5 this season with a 4.03 ERA, but in eight career starts at Fenway Park, he is 4-1 with an ERA of 2.13. Overall against Boston Price is 8-5 with a 3.27 ERA.

The Red Sox have relied heavily on their bats all season long but they have been struggling a bit ever since heading into the All-Star break. The six runs on Tuesday night was just the second time in their last eight games that they scored more than four runs. Overall, Boston is still the highest scoring team in baseball with an average of 5.1 runs a game. That has helped the team earn the best record in the Majors at 61-41 which includes a 34-18 record at home.

Boston will send Felix Doubront to the mound in Game 3 as its starter. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in his last 10 starts including a gem against the Rays on June 18 where he kept them scoreless on three hits over eight full innings of work. Overall the left-hander is 7-3 with a 3.76 ERA. Lifetime against Tampa Bay, Doubront is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.05.

Free MLB Pick

Both of these starters have had success against the opposing team so this matchup could very well turn into a pitcher’s duel despite all the firepower that both the Rays and the Red Sox have at the plate. If playing a side I would have to go with Boston as a rare underdog at home, but the free MLB pick for this contest is UNDER on the total line.
