Game Overview

When Atlanta starter Tim Hudson was lost for the season with a broken ankle, many bettors expected the Braves to take a step backwards in their quest for the NL East Division title. Instead, they have blown the race wide open with an 11-game winning streak that includes a 3-2 victory over the Nationals as 123 road underdogs in Game 1 of this three-game set. Atlanta is now 68-45 on the year and its lead in the division has ballooned to 13.5 games. The total stayed UNDER the seven-run line on Monday night and it has stayed UNDER in its last three games.

While the Braves’ starting rotation definitely took a major hit with the loss of Hudson, the overall staff is still one of the best in the NL with a team ERA of 3.27. Julio Teheran is scheduled to get the start on Tuesday night. The right-hander is 8-5 on the year with a 3.02 ERA. He has already faced Washington three times this season and is 1-0 with an ERA of 4.50.

Barring any kind of dramatic turnaround over the final 50 games of the season, the 2013 season will go down as a major disappointment for a Nationals’ team that was opened by most sportsbooks as the favorite to not only win the NL East this season but the pennant as well. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 54-58 overall. The Nat’s have gone 31-26 at their home ball park.

Scoring has been an issue for Washington all season long and it is now ranked 14th in the NL with an average of 3.7 runs a game. Its pitching has held up pretty well with a team ERA of 3.73 which is ranked seventh in the league. Gio Gonzalez is slated to get the start for this contest. The left-hander is coming off his worst outing this season in which he was tagged for 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings. Overall, he is 7-4 on the year with a 3.57 ERA. Gonzalez is 2-4 against the Braves with an ERA of 5.73.

Free MLB Pick

While the Nationals may have a slight edge in this matchup when it comes to the starters, it is extremely hard to bet against the Braves right now as they continue to finds ways to win. The free MLB pick is to ride this winning streak for at least one more game with Atlanta squeezing-out another tight victory on Tuesday night.
