Probable Starters: Scherzer (Detroit) vs. Buchholz (Boston)
Moneyline: Boston -118
The Boston Red Sox are right on the verge of the World Series once again, but they are going to need to work for it for sure. The Detroit Tigers aren't going down without a fight in spite of the fact that they, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, have to win two games on the road to keep their season going.
Detroit isn't dead yet, and we think that the way that it fought back in Game 5 of this series is indicative of what we are going to see all game long in Boston. The offense isn't going to need to give a whole heck of a lot of help to get the job done in this game with RHP Max Scherzer on the mound. In the regular season, Scherzer went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA, and it is clear that he is going to win the Cy Young Award in the American League. Here in the playoffs, Scherzer has been every bit as good, though he is going to take some heat for ultimately leading the team to a loss in Game 2 of this series here in Beantown six days ago. All Scherzer has done in his last four outings including his final one in the regular season that proved to be the difference between winning the Central Division and being stuck in a wicked playoff is throw 23 innings, allow 10 hits and 12 walks with four runs allowed and 36 strikeouts. That K/9 ratio is the one that really stands out, and we don't think that it's a mistake that he struck out 13 Red Sox batters in Game 2.
Boston has had an answer for just about everything Detroit has thrown its way in this series, but it's not over yet. Getting this last win is going to be the tough one for sure. The team isn't going to have the better pitcher on the mound in either of these games, and it is just going to have to stick to its script of trying to keep games close to get it to the bullpen with a chance to shut the door. RHP Clay Buchholz is pitching for the second time in this series, and he has to be scared out of his mind for what he is going to be facing. Buchholz has been blasted in both of his two starts here in the postseason, first by allowing three runs in six frames against the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, and then by allowing five runs on eight hits in Game 2 of this series. The Red Sox bailed out Buchholz in this most recent outing, but you can't count on a granny by DH David Ortiz in every game to help you out.
The Red Sox are favored in this game, and we can't quite put our finger on what that is the case. As the underdog team, Detroit is the definitive play in this series. Every time you think you've figured out what is going on in this series, something turns the tide, and the tide will turn again on Saturday with Scherzer pitching a gem of a game to beat the Bo Sox.
